Depends on whether or not you handload. If you handload you can tweak things to work pretty easily, but factory fodder out of a short bbl?
Most rifle rounds out of carbines will blow your ballcap off with the muzzle blast most likely.
Mind you, are 444 Marlin loads tailored somewhat to shorter bbls?
Not really. I just have a preference for longer barrels on lever guns. For me 26" is my favourite configuration. I own 18, 22, 24, and 26 inch Marlins and the 22 probably balances the best with a scope but it still plenty short for heavy bush stuff. The 18" is nice for back packing or carrying on a hike but to me it's a bit too short to point well.
Agreed, the 18.5" is a bit short and barks pretty good. I've had all the Marlin's from 16.25" up to 26", I find the 20" to be a nice Balance. I've never had a 444 in 20", the 18.5" was a beast, mind you it was ported.
I've been very satisfied by my 444S, from the 70s. 22" barrel seems perfect and never a problem even in willow swamps. Ken Waters in Pet Loads suggests the 22" is a good compromise between length and velocity performance. Many folks like there short Guide model but to me there is no advantage or need to shorten a barrel.
