What To Do With My New Husqvarna.............300 H&H Comes to Mind

I purchased an old commercial 98 actioned Husqvarna from Buster95 here on CGN. It is now in 30-06, which I have no need for another, and was thinking it would be a sweet 300 H&H. I have never had a 300 H&H and this being a beautiful commercial action (with no thumb slot) and a quite nice Schnabel forend stock, that is solid, no cracks or chips. The action is clean and original with no screw holes in it and the sights come up perfectly as the rifle is shouldered.
Lengthening the throw and magazine is well within my capabilities, so the H&H is not a huge stretch from the existing design, or any great expense. I may just buy a new bottom metal assy for the H&H length case from PT&G or Sunnyhill and work from there.
I already have a 308 NM, 300 RUM, 300 Wby and a 300 Win or 2, a couple 30-06s and several 308s so, I pretty much have the 30s covered..........but like I said I've never had a 300 H&H.............HHHMMMMMMM.
Of course I know that I need another project, cause I'm down to a couple dozen or so which should keep me busy for the next several years..............but what is man without dreams and plans?
 
Doug; The 300 H&H sounds like a great plan!! The old warrior still has a lot of life in her, and ballistically, duplicates those new fangled 300 WSM's.

I truly regret letting go of my 700 "Classic" so chambered. :(

I'm very interested to hear exactly what you have to do to make it happen with that action as I have a couple similar actions and always wondered how much work it would be to convert one to a longer mag cartridge.
 
a good man can be so good without a 300hh ... i regret to sell mine and i think i ll get another one soon.

do it that way Doug nobody will complain for sure especially on a CRF action lol.

even the brass are now easy to find.

i liked in the old days using the 220 grains winchester silvertip.

I have the technical expertize to make it long enough.........trust me, or I would not be considering it. It is a bit of work, however there have been many, many 98s made in 300 and 375 H&H.

My God BB..........how many thumpers does one man need...........besides, I already had a 416 Taylor and killed a bunch of sh!t in Africa with it, including my first Cape Buff...........No I'm thinking more of an iron sighted all around classic. Minimal cost by reusing the barrel and stock, just making it better than an '06, well maybe not better but more unique.........
 
Definitely go for it. Maybe get the fella in Taylor who made the stock fro the Sako to do one up for the prospective 300 HH as well. Since I have a soft spot for M-70's I thought it would nice to have one in 300 HH. Not going to pay the bucks they want for a pre 64 though. I also had thought an 30-06 length action would be to short. Then again I don't work with metal so I don't know what can be done. If one was come up with a M-70 30-06 action could it be made to handle the 300 HH as well? Anyways it will be interesting to follow this thread to see what develops.

If the prospective build is supposed to be cheapish (reusing barrel, moderately priced rifle ect.) I don't think a handmade stock would be an option. $$$

I did not mean to be loose with other folks money just meant to suggest having a .375 HH and a 300 HH both stocked in the same style by the same craftsman would be a really nice family pair.
 
I can't believe that a rifle loony like you has never had a Super 30!

And to the naysayers, Harry Selby's 416 Rigby was built on a standard-length 98 Mauser. Ted beat me to it. Rats.
 
I'm a huge fan of the 300H&H. I've been loading and testing my father in law's pre-64 model 70 over the last while and I am having a hard time looking at the rest of the rifles in my own safe. It's not much notable difference from the 300win that I already own but definitely a little less recoil. And talk about the smoothest feeding rifle I've ever handled.

Now that would be something special.

On another note, I wonder if there would be feeding problems given the relative straightness of the '06 case and the taper of the Holland. The feed rails might not like the taper and it might be inclined to misfeed. Not sure this would be the case but it's probably been overcome before. I'm sure lots of people converted '06s into Hollands in years gone by.
