Good day CGN'ers... I have a newish Mark II, but it has difficulty extracting CCI standards, velocitors, and Stingers. I get my best groups with Standard and Velocitors, but they stop extracting after 10 - 15 rounds. Federal AE, Remington gold bullets, an subsonics all extract just fine. The gold bullets group almost as nice... In fact, after shooting some sticky CCI's, the AE's or Remington clear up the problem. Would this be due to the wax that seems to coat the CCI's, or am I missing something on cleaning / maintenance?

Let me know what you think, I'm hoping to buy a case of the standards if we can figure this out.

Thanks!

Had similar problem..I wouldn't say I polished it but gave the chamber a thorough scrubbing and problem went away.

The bolt would come back without ejection, I would have to pry the round out. Problem has gone away..

This problem seems to occur sometimes with the Savage MKII series. I had a BTV that never failed to extract, but a friend's would get an FTE every 10 rounds or so, as seems to be the case with you. He tried using the bolt from an FV. The gun functioned, but the extraction problem still persisted. He then replaced the extractor but that didn't solve the problem either. My theory is that due to QC issues the internal geometry of some of the receivers is just slightly out of spec.

I don't think there's a guaranteed solution, but I would recommend the following:

1. Make sure the chamber and the little slot where the extractor point seats is clean.
2. If one type of ammunition functions properly and you are happy with its performance, just stick with that.
3. If the gun is still under warranty consider returning it for service.
4. A new extractor might work better. They are available from Savage.
5. If all else fails, consider selling the gun with full disclosure (you'll take a financial hit but it might be worth it in the long run) and get a new gun.

My FVT did the same thing. I ended up swapping extractors out of an older Lakefield bolt ( very minor fitting was required) and it's been working great.

Thanks for all the good advice, I'll try scrubbing the heck out of it before I go to the range tonight... If that doesn't work I'll get to work on the bolt components, thanks!

IMHO the problem is the wax used to lube the CCI bullets. My Mk II extracted just fine all summer with little attention then wouldn't extract reliably on the first cold day I shot it this fall. I cleaned the chamber with a .22 cal copper brush (from the breech) with a patch rolled around it and soaked with brake cleaner. Problem solved. (I shoot CCI Standard Velocity only in this rifle because it is so accurate).

I'm having the same problem with my btvs.

It only started after I started using a new batch of cci standard velocity. I think there's too much wax on them.
An older batch was fine as well as any other ammo I've used.

I guess I'll have to scrub the hell out of it, get new ammo and save the cci for my old reliable cooey.
