Prepping moose antlers for mounting

Well, I've been busy.

I found a shape I liked for the plaque. Looks like an arrowhead. Probably terribly wrong to mount the antlers of a moose I shot with a rifle on it, but I like it ;-)

I adapted the shape so it would fit a piece of walnut I had lying around. I created a template from the drawing on a piece of MDF. The template is only 1 side of the arrowhead, which will be mirrored on the other side of the center line. This ensures it's perfectly symmetrical.

The template will mount on the back of the plaque (so I can trim the walnut to the exact shape of the template)

Still have a bit of work to do, but here's what it'll look like:

Cheers!

I've never tried it, but have heard that you can use Potassium Permanganate to re-colour the antlers. The only warning I've heard, is to be careful and make sure you start with just a little. If you have an old shed laying around it might be worth practicing on.

Here's a bit more for the 1-2 people that might be following this thread hehe.

I had a heartbreaking moment yesterday. I was trimming my plaque to match the size of my template and fed it incorrectly into the router table, which resulted in some pretty bad tear out:

After that (and after uttering nasty words I dare not write here), I turned everything off and went to do other things. Any actions I might of done would of worsen what I had already done.

This morning, I did a quick test that confirmed the mistake I had made the day before. I adjusted the template and then redid a couple of passes on the router table to trim it all to it's new size. Pretty happy how that turned out:

And I finally, I ran the top face down on the router table, against a 5/16th roman ogee profile bit and now it really shines!

Still need to clean it up, and sand it, etc. But it's getting there!

Fish, looking good there for a first timer...
Sometimes , one just has to shut the power off put the tools down and go outside behind the wood shed and have a good cuss session.
Could have been worse , you coulda took a chunk of your skin out with that router blade ;)
Keep us posted on the finished project.

At this point, I would have a question for those of you who already have a plaque or have made one yourselves.

Where is the mounting hardware installed (on the back side) in relation to the antlers?

Progress report! I routed a hole in the back to hide the hanging hardware. I wanted the mount to lie flat on the wall. I don't have a plunging router, so I used a press drill. Not quite perfect, but still decent!

Here's the result so far:

I added a brass plaque and started the finishing. Unfortunately, our camera is going for repairs. I won't have any pics for a little while.

Alrighty, should be the final update! The plaque is up on the wall. It's all finished up.

The holes in the skull part:

Mounting hardware re-installed after finish is applied:

Here is a pic of the finish applied (3 coats of Watco Spray semi-gloss lacquer) and the brass plaque I had laser engrave is installed (fair disclaimer, I used an editor to remove my name and our hunting spot's name!):

All finished up and mounted on the wall:
