Picked up an older model Ruger M77 International full wood carbine with tang safety, red pad, adjustable trigger, etc. I haven't owned one since the early 80's and need a bit of info. Is there a way to tell by serial number when the rifle was made? What is the function of the screw in the bottom of the slot for the front sight blade? Is there a Ruger rifle forum somewhere on-line? Thanks.

Yes, a .308 in more or less "as new" or NRA "excellent" cond., and with a piece of walnut with good figure in the butt unlike the bland wood I've seen on more recent Rugers.

You'd think the Ruger manual would "explain everything", but it doesn't.

I owned a standard M-77 30-06 in the early 1980's and it was an accurate rifle, shooting 1.5 inch groups regularly at 200 yards with full power hunting loads, 180 gr. bullets at an honest 2700+ fps. However it was not a handy hunting rifle. The stock felt like a 2x4 and I did sell it after awhile.

Thanks for the link. Helpful, but I still don't get why the front base screw is there...it doesn't seem to hold the base to the barrel. The rifle didn't come with a front sight blade (on order) which is why I noticed it. Although it came with Ruger rings, I'm not scoping this rifle. Instead I am putting on a NECG receiver peep sight. I've used these before and I like them. They keep the rifle light and handy and easy to carry with one hand but allow more accurate fast aiming than the stock open rear sight.

This should give you the info you need to put a date to your rifle:

I've never had the front sight out of mine, but if I had to guess it's likely there to hold the base in place.

The little screw is quite short, thats why I don't get it.

Anyway, just for fun, here's a couple photos of the Ruger. Its hard to photograph the figure in the butt wood because it changes so much in different light.

It was made in 1984. The wood is also nicely fitted, not left "proud" anywhere.

Let me know when you find a supplier of the peep sight Rob, I'm on the hunt for one as well.

But I still don't get what the other screw under the front sight blade is for....it doesn't hold down or register the ramp...the blade is held in the dovetail groove by friction and a spring loaded plunger at the back (the bead end) of the ramp which fits into a hole in the sight blade (which I think is opposite to the way its held in on regular M77s)...all I can think of the other screw doing is maybe providing some additional friction...if it is carefully filed down to do this...
