Valmet (Ak-ish) with an AR magwell and other musings on conversions

Yes but I didn't compare it with my m78s which are 7.62x39 and clkne was 223 when I had it

I have some really good pics of comparisons of AK - VALMET parts.
Just need to sift thru my emails to find them.

Norinco made a copy of the valmet hunter in 223 and 7.62x39. I have both, but they didn't make the "cut". They are Ak along
with my svd's. Back in the "day", they were a fun gun. I had the valet 71's. Norinco made a close copy .

Considering I sent my M78 stamped receiver to dlask for an "AK UPGRADE" and was told it's a no go says something.

To the OP, i hope it can work off the hunter receiver and if it can then I may just need another Valmet project

Should totally do a sticky worthy post on this. I have been looking at the m78 I picked up. Some of the parts look like they would interchange and from what I have read on other forms there are a bunch that should swap but I am questioning it. Would be nice to know since spare parts aren't all that common.

+1 for photo comparisons. I can provide Hunter pictures from the same angle and measurements ;)

A lot of the parts interchange (between valmet models, valmet machined vs stamped receivers and with galils and with aks) and a lot don't. I've done some testing, is there something in particular you are interested in?

As an incentive, here's how a handguard designed for a galil fits on a hunter. No adapters necessary, but I may file off a bit of metal where it presses on the receiver. This will be going on a 308 hunter to do a modern galil sniper setup. Pictured on the 223 receiver for now - don't want to disassemble the 308 quite yet.

That is mighty fine!

Brand??? That makes a hunter build much more interesting. Forget barrel swaps and shop work. Everything forward of the receiver could be left be, with perhaps the barrel being threaded.

CAA. That's the intention for my 308 build. muzzle brake, galil front post (in the bacground), galil receiver cover (so that the iron sights are higher), galil spring guide (need the latch to keep the cover on)

That simplifies the transformation process so much. But I think will look right. Where did you get the rail? Import? Is it metal or polymer?

Disregard. Found it online. Aluminum. And NOT cheap haha. $600 ish.

Metal. Aluminium. Import but from Israel so it's pretty easy. Bought from Israel Defense Store (no link, not a sponsor, but you can google them pretty easily). One of our sponsors from Israel could easily carry it if they wanted to (yes, I'm looking at Zahal.org :p).

Yup - you got it. That's where I'm going with the 308.

I fully expect to have to relieve the rail a tiny bit or the receiver dust cover won't fit. So it's not a 100% drop-in part...

Guess the valmet Hunter search might start sooner than later. Time to find a deal on GB.

Looks mighty fine!!!!!!

Thread the barrel, considering yours doesn't need a handguard adapter unlike my Galil clone needed, get dlask to build you a stock adapter and you should be golden.

Once I find my emails regarding someone off of valmet Org comparing AK parts to valmet m78 parts they will be posted.

I know for a fact that AK gas pistons are shorter in length and shaped differently then m78 ones

Honestly I would love to just find some wood furniture that would fit for now so I could keep the original stuff I have in good condition. I'm tempted to order some RPK stuff because I want a really nice red finish. Not having a gas block on my M78 would mean I need to have a custom piece made or make a filler piece and mod AK stuff to fit. Took off the factory stuff to look and valmet did some really weird stuff with furniture that no other AK variant has. Buttstock has a weird nub it sits on (certain AK models could be chopped and notched), the pistol grip would need to be drilled with a tap installed and a custom trigger guard piece of metal bent. The front hand guards are the worst having no gas block and a totally different shape to the retaining pieces.

Would be nice to know its possible to get an extra bolt carrier in the future sometime as you cannot just replace the valmet bolt with an AK one, apparently the entire bolt carrier, piston, and bolt need to be replaced together. AK extractors are different and firing pins from what I have read. The only reason I even care is because the guns never going to be produced again and I have no intentions of ever selling it.

Also apparently all trigger parts and hammer is interchangeable with most other AK variants but some minor fitting may be required.

If someone starts the valmet super thread I have a bunch of photos of the furniture and how it mounts that I will add to it.

FYI the aluminum rail is awesome, worth every penny of $600 if that's what a guy wants to do! The ones for the swiss arms are about $200 more than that and I seriously consider ordering one every day....
