Why can't we hunt with handguns?

Is there any logic at all behind this? I mean, theres a special deer season for bow+muzzle loaders, why should handguns not be allowed then too? It would make much more sense to buy a bigger, more powerful revolver like the S+W 500,if you could actually use it for something beside blowing bigger holes in paper. The skill required to get a deer within 40 yards to shoot with a big revolver would be the same as required by bow hunters. I just don't see the logic here.

This might be one of the things that handgunners should try to make a real push for.

To be allowed to hunt with them, the laws around restricted firearms would all need to be overhauled... It isn't so much an issue of not being allowed to hunt with them... it is the fact that we cannot legally load and fire a restricted firearm anywhere but an approved range .. .44 mag and higher obviously have plenty of power for hunting. That isn't the issue...

Great question. I've looked into this but have not found or heard anything reliable or verifiable.
Would love to see this reversed but frankly can't see that happening. Easier permitting for wilderness carry would be an ok consolation prize.

We can't hunt with handguns in Canada because the firearms regulations are intended to severely limit the use of restricted class firearms. Hunting would be an excuse for handguns to be out and about much more.

Hmmm. From what I have been told, we could hunt with handguns up until less than 50 years ago. And then along came Turdeau, and the Just Society.

I've been into the handgun scene for quite a while, even prior to the Turdeau and pre-metric era, and I don't recall ever being 'legally' allowed to use them in the field on game. However, I do believe back a ways, trappers could use them to finish off trapped animals.

I'd just like to pack my little H&R .22 into the bush to hunt grouse. I think it's silly and awkward to pack two rifles, one for big game and a rim fire for smaller critters....

Yep,I about lost interest in rabbit hunting but if I could hunt them with my Buckmark .22 it would really bring back the thrill. It would be much sportier for the bunnies too.

It's simple really. We can't take handguns when we're hunting, because we're all just barely contained slathering lunatics.
While I can't imagine 'hunting' with a handgun, it makes a great 'finisher' or easy to deploy option when you have that "Gee, that bear is getting pretty close!" epiphany.
Sadly, the truth remains, that if we stepped outside of the very narrowly defined permissions to leave our homes with a restricted firearm, we'd very soon be shouting "Yippe Ki Yay!" and blasting away at everything that moved.
Thank goodness they keep protecting us from ourselves...

This is just to stop us from caring handguns without a permit. It is same like ban on black powder hunting in many of EU countries. Black powder guns are over the counter think in many plus hunting licence is not that difficult to get but getting permit for hunting rifle is another thing. So you have hunting permit but no gun. Same with pistols you can sport shoot with it home range but for hunting you would be without control or limits where you can take it
