Help identifying these ducks

Yeah, it's my first season duck hunting. Flying down the river at you they often seem to look like wood ducks. I knew the bufflehead. Golden eye is the biggest one we weren't sure about, mergansers we were pretty sure. Thanks for your help guys. Thanks for nothing from the #######s who go out of their way to put people down. :)

I understand this is your first duck hunting season, but if you continue on this course of shooting first and asking questions later you are eventually going to end up in deep DO-DO with the law!

I'm just gonna stick to mallards after this. They re still my favorite after trying the other ones. Waterfowl identification book. Check!

Harlequin ducks I did do a reasonable amount of checking on prior to season. Also I actually knew what everything except the golden eye was (or atleast was pretty sure), so thanks for the idents so I ll know better for next time. My normal spots only have mallards and Woodies so this was really good exposure.

Looks like a great hunt, nice to see some guys still hunting once the weather isn't so fair. Don't sweat the haters, they just love to complain about every and any thing. Get out have fun - if you are in a province where there's a species of concern (reduced bag limit) make sure you know what they look like otherwise a duck is a duck is a duck - In SK all you really have to know is what a Pintail is the rest of the ducks are just one more duck towards your 8 bird limit. You will quickly learn what to and what not to shoot after cooking your birds - some birds simply taste like #### unless you can completely mask their flavour in a chilli, gumbo etc.

you actually ate those chite ducks? I'm actually :puke: just thinking about it!

Likewise, I figured he was talking about one of them 'bald headed eagles'

That's the one. Just making the point. Know your target and beyond.

Sticking to the obviously ID'd ducks is a great idea. Expand your targeted species as your ID skills increase. Congrats on the hunt and that all your birds were legal. Now you know for next time. No harm no foul. Zing!

Get yourself a zippy bag, some milk, rose-marie and tyme spices and stick the
stinky ducks in there.
Marry-in-ate over night in the fridge.
Sploosh the bag around a bit every wunce in a while.
Suppose to take the stink and gamenyness owt of them.

and remove/dont touch the preen gland or the oil gland as I have "heard" that it can contribute to the unpleasantness

Us old farm boys in Saskabush would call the ones on the left "$hit ducks". No matter, as long as they are being used for food!

To be fair, you old farm boys call anything that isn't a mallard a sh*t duck. Not throwing stones, I come from old farm boy stock, but there is life out there past greenheads.

There are tons of types of ducks out there, get researching, takes a bit of time to learn each and there habits of what they do, how they fly when they come in. Hopefully one there in the pic wasnt a grebe.

Kamlooky gives good advice, but I would use buttermilk.

Always skin fish ducks, their fat is what tastes "off" in my experience. You can also grind the meat and mix it with pork fat for sausage and you will never know it was a merganser
