I've been thinking about a 1911 for awhile. I've gone back and forth between a "frugal" Ruger SR1911 or a S&W E series around 1K with the occasional "maybe I should just go all in and buy a Springfield TRP or even a Les Baer". I see the STI's are on sale. Would a Trojan in .45 ACP be a good compromise?

(This would be my first venture into 1911's)

Absolutely IMHO.

I have one Trojan 9mm & a Spartan 45.. great values good shooters and very good support from STI.. the best deal unless you just need to spend the money or like the high priced bling

Not only a good compromise, a good choice! STI makes great guns ... very tight and accurate. Have a Spartan .45 and a close buddy has a Trojan .45 which I shoot often. Probly the best bang for your buck, also IMHO.

STI is a superb choice. The ONLY downside is that I've seen a number of them where the dark finish has developed a buffed sort of wear on the edges from use. If you'll be using it from a holster or don't handle it with care you'll find the same thing will occur. For folks that want it for serious shooting this is not a concern. But if you're the sort that fusses over every mark and even the slide to frame marks on the rails make you lose sleep an STI may not be the best choice.

That's my only hesitation. I'm not sure if it's "pretty" enough. I'd really like either a nice deep glossy blue (1st choice) or stainless (2nd) with checkered wood grips (a nice wood grain with a gloss finish)

Do it, do it now!

The deal at FV is excellent. And a Trojan is a rock-solid choice.

The current IPSC Classic Division National Champion shoot a Trojan... If it's good enough for him (and the amount he shoots...) it should be alright for you!

These guys are all correct...but....

I will get egged for this, but I don't care. Go down to the gun shop and get the clerks to pull them all out from under the counter and fondle them. I looked at STI, S&W, Springfield and some other one...and the STI's are nice. They're ALL good and they all had flawless triggers and they were all around 1600~2000...but I went with the Springfield. The cool kids will probably beat me up for it but whatever - I have an M1A that is not the most accurate rifle I have ever had - but it is still the best rifle I've ever owned. If the same guys want to build me a match pistol I am just peachy with it.

I now worship at the holy altar of the Crossed Cannons and will probably be crucified for my faith by the pagans, soddomites and filthy firearm forum philistines of the Canadian Gunnutz. So be it. ;)

Les Baer guns would be awesome too - I wish I could have laid hands on one but nobody in my neighbourhood had anything in stock.

^ Good advice One Lung but unfortunately my LGS has little or nothing in stock in terms of 1911's. For me it's going to be a case of internet research and then taking the plunge. FWIW a Springfield 1911 Loaded @ 1279.00 that Wanstalls has is another possibility.

Just to go in a different direction ...What makes an onsale $1050 Trojan $340 better than a $803.00 Spartan on sale for $710?

edit

Whoops...never mind the above...the Springfield is a 9mm. Wanstalls Springfield .45's are all 1400+

..........and then there is S&W E series 1911 for 949

See, way too many choices!

I had the same question and for me the Trojan was well worth the upgrade.
Trojan is blued rather than parked. It has the undercut front strap and STI stippling for better grip. It also has the fully ramped barrel.

Still waffling.....waiting to see what reliable has in their sale tomorrow.

Any opinions on the Kimber Grand Raptor II's? They are -30% from Reliable tomorrow....(1789 for 1252)

I keep hearing that. If it's true how to they continue to survive selling $1000-$2500+ guns?

they look pretty and most people dont shoot enough to give a #### how well a gun works or holds up.

Trojan is great, spartan is great. Buy whichever one you can justify easiest. I will say I am tempted by a trojan in .40 for my self for IPSC with that sale on. I do need a back up and I do want to retire my spartan...

Trojan is not only a great value but a great gun....yeah the blueing wears off, but that only adds character!
These are hand fitted/assembled and are smooth.
I'm a 1911 guy all the way and all of mine are STI's.......second for me would be a Springfield 'Loaded' or better yet 'TRP'
Price of a TRP gets you two Trojans at that price.
