henry 45-70 reviews?

they have suposedly been out now in the states since last spring but i havent had much luck finding any reviews on them or ship dates upto canada. Anybody out there no much about them? Im at the point where i need another 45-70 in my life, and wanted to compare it to the marlins out there now before making the big jump and having to tell the wife she can go shoping (me gets gun = her gets shoes)

Check out the review on gun blast... I just picked one up, haven't shot it yet but cant wait! What I can tell you is that I bought a marlin 336 bl in 30 30... side by side the henry 45 70 quality is spectacular! And I wont buy another marlin.

Like everything about my Henry 30-30 except for that damn front loading. Action is slick with a nice trigger, I imagine the 45-70 version is a well built piece of gun too. The ones I've looked at in store were very nice.

I like the fact that the Henry comes with XS ghost ring sights and that it weighs the same 7 lbs. as a Marlin 1895G.The other good feature is the transfer bar safety.(No dumb safety button thru the receiver.) The mag-tube loading feature I could live with, but other folks may not dig it. Henry quality speaks for itself whereas Marlin quality of late is hit and miss.

I love all of my Henry rifles... .44 Mag BB, .30/30, .45/70, .22 Frontier, .22 Mag GB...

Guess what my favorite feature is (other than tje excellent fit & finish)... MAG TUBE LOADING!!!

They are solid, well made and accurate guns.

The advantage I see in a front load mag tube like the henry is the ease of unloading, much more gentle on your ammo. Also if you need to top up your henry you can just drop a round in the chamber.. everyone has preferences.. I like both for different reasons.

Bingo! That's why I liked my Rossi 92 in .454 magnum, plus the fact that you could top up the magazine through the loading port if needed.

I handled a henry in 45-70 yesterday. It's a slick little rifle. I don't like the front loading though. The rear load is much better for my job. If I could get a receiver loading one in 44 mag, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

I like mag tube loading for how it does not deformed the ammo and the speed of loading with a speed loaders, and the speed of unloading... once you get use to it, it is considerably better than using a loading gate.

As a dissenter here... (flame suit on) - I won't be buying any henry, ever, until they get the SCALE weight of their offerings under 7 lbs and add a receiver loading gate. Period. I hate tube gates like I hate ebola and detachable mags on a Mauser. YMMV.

henry rifles have a big info commercial that I see on the boob tube every once in a while .thy look like a heck of a good gun with top customer service .I would buy one if I needed a rifle ,Dutch

I've played with them a bit, but what first soured me on the Henry was when they started buying "Evil Roy" endorsements for their .22 rifles and bribing... err... I mean "sponsoring" the SASS to get their non-period modern lever rifles class as CAS-legal, despite a plethora of authentic-design choices out there. The Marlin 336, on which the Henry action is based, was not invented until the 1950's!!! No other firearm got that SASS treatment, except for perhaps the Ruger Vaquero, which I also dislike for the same reason.

Loading gates are a personal preference thing. I mean... they copied the 336 action almost exactly! And yet they didn't copy the single best feature of the 336! SO STRANGE!?!?! Plenty of real estate on the action to add one too!

The .45-70 Henry is not made in brass. I doubt they ever will b/c of how hot you can load that cartridge and ongoing discussions on the wisdom of not using steel in high-round count Henry's.

Marlin CBs will be here again, if you impatient, call irunguns and import one

Well had the henry out at the range on the weekend and here's what I can say:

Function was flawless, and the manner of loading was very easy with gloved hands.. where as loading my marlin 336bl required removing my gloves.( as the tip of my glove would get caught in the loading gate)

This was a get to know you session so accuracy was not tested. I shot almost 70+ rounds:
- 20 Remington 400 GR jsp low pressure ammo 1000 fps rated( I liked this ammo roughly 3 inch group at 30 meters standing unsupported) almost no recoil.
- 20 federal 300 GR soft point (poor man's fusion, fps unknown)
- 20 old winchester 300 GR jhp... fairly hot..
- 10 hsm 430 GR hard cast, 1700 fps rated
- 6 Hornady 325 GR lever evolution 2000 fps rated

Recoil was a surprise, I expected it to be more violent. I would say it was no more unpleasant than shooting a 12 GA with 2 3/4 in high velocity 1 oz slugs.

The gun shot very low with all ammo and sight adjustment will be required however this will happen during my load development.

My goal is a 405 GR hard cast at 1600 fps.. and I have several loads on the drawing board.

Cleaning was simple... just like a marlin take the lever screw out, remove the bolt clean the bore and done. I did notice some chatter marks in the rifling near the muzzle.. this did not seem to cause any fouling issues however we shall see how accuracy is during load development.
