Tavor CTAR (Restricted)

Only reason I can think of that would make that possible is the U-shape in the handgaurd that rests on the barrel.

Beings the barrel is short it maybe holds it from whipping vs the extra 3.5" whipping? I knoe free float would be ideal and it is possible to remove the "u"

Why worry about it, the rifle was designed by an engineer and the U must be in there for a reason. Just leave it alone and enjoy your rifle. What would you gain? 1/4 moa at most?
I don't think I ever got an answer the last time I asked, can you get a barrel extension for these? It isn't the same as an AR extension is it? Having a new barrel made would be the best option if you want a different length and/or better accuracy.

Its there to hold the IDF style front flip up sight steady since the polymer is prone to flexing.

Well I'm sure removing it isn't going to increase accuracy enough to even worry about.
If I owned one I would seriously look into replacing the barrel. Only if I was unhappy with the accuracy though, I understand what the rifle was designed to do and would probably be fine just leaving it alone and shooting the heck out of it. When I find one for the right price maybe I'll give one a try. Maybe owning one instead of just shooting other people's will sway me.

Wanna trade for my Deagle? I'll even throw in a little cash :)

Seems like I'm late to this thread! Here's mine ;)

I don't know if anyone notices, but one thing that helps a lot when shooting is a Gen 1 trigger(As in the trigger, not the trigger pack). The face of the trigger is positioned much more rearward than Gen 2+. It also has a very flat trigger face. This, in my opinion, translates to a more comfortable and tight trigger pull.

For your DTA .338? Sure, I will swing by your place tomorrow! I will even through in the GHW parts and MI XTL forend!

And if you leave optics on yours, I will leave my Elcan and Surefire 600u on as well! :p

You would have to give me every firearm you own and you'd still have to come up with something else to sweeten the deal.
The DTA will never be sold or traded.

onetwentyish, you should give me your Tavor and I'll work on it this winter, I should be able to have a functioning 300BLK for you by spring. I just need a barrel extension and $500 for the barrel blank and machining. ;)

Hmm. Maybe. But I highly doubt North Sylva can get barrel extensions if they can not get barrels... I will contact Jon however and see what is doable. This would completely circumvent the need for barrels by allowing people to have 1 offs made. Heavy-pencil thickness, 14"-26" if one chose too...

The .300BLK cycling correctly kind of has me worried however.

The .300BLK cycling correctly kind of has me worried however.

Any 223 rifle should be able to be easily converted if the correct barrel extension can be sourced. Ian never got back to me about what ammo he was using for his testing but I know from experience that not all factory subsonic 300BLK ammo will cycle a semi auto. My PWS AR wouldn't cycle Hornady 208gr factory loads but I could easily get my rifle to cycle the same bullet with my handloads and still keep them subsonic. My ACR was not difficult to get cycling correctly and will now cycle all bullet weights including 208gr subsonic loads.

Remember that the 300BLK/300Whisper cartridge was designed to be used in rifles converted from a 223/5.56 rifle with no modifications other than the barrel. Not all factory ammo and not all reloading data was developed for use in a semi auto rifle and that not all rifles have stock components, putting a heavy buffer in a rifle to smooth out the 223/5.56 cycling then converting it to 300BLK without putting a standard weight buffer back in will throw off the system and cause failures. The 300BLK bolt cycles much slower and is a smoother shooting rifle than a 223/5.56 and doesn't need heavy buffers or stiffer recoil springs.

You find a barrel extension and gas system and I'm sure I could get it cycling without problems as long as my buddy still has a barrel blank available and has the time to machine it to your specs it should be easy to have it done by March (sooner if we didn't have regular jobs and families to keep us from getting things done).

If I owned a Tavor I'm sure I would have a functioning 300BLK Tavor within a couple months. If anyone wants to trade a Tavor for my Deagle plus a little cash I'll start working on it and share all findings once it's done.

This thread was a bad influence on me...I ended up ordering a CTAR from one of the vendors whose Black Friday sale hadn't quite ended yet. I just need to figure out what to sell to pay for it !
