Hey guys, have just gotten into firearms. Already own two restricted pistols, but would like to get into shotguns. I'm looking to purchase my first shotgun, and trying to keep cost low (<$800) until I'm more familiar with them. Primary goal is to shoot clays at my local range but would possibly be interested in doing some small game hunting in future (e.g. goose or turkey). Would a mossberg 500 3-barrel combination be a good starter? Where's a good resource for me to learn about the different types of barrels and their use? Thanks!

That will do very nicely.

The Mossberg 500 is a solid shotgun. Plenty of aftermarket accessories available too, if you should need them.

One of the great design features of the 500 is the ease of swapping barrels. You can do it blindfolded, in about 5 seconds.

With those 3 barrels included, you can use it for just about anything.

i bought a Yildiz SPZ M as my first shotgun. i take it out for pheasant and chukar and it performs very well. i also use it for trap shooting a lot. paid just under $700 for it including tax from Sail (when they had their 10% off sale)

the only thing i dont like is the factory recoil pad. it is so thin that it is barely non-existent. my shoulder gets a bit sore after 3 rounds of trap. should be getting a Limbsaver pad for it soon so i hope that solves the issue.

my next shotgun will probably be another over&under. crossing my fingers for a beretta.

All your bases are covered. That gun design has been around a lot of years, so it is well proven.

Best resource to find out about shotguns? Right here on CGN!

mosburgh 500 is a excellent gun and the 2 or 3 barrel combos are excellent starter kits. I was going to get this but got a dam good price on a hatsan escort pump shotgun, comes with 5 chokes so decent to start off as well.

Quite partial to the 3 barrel combo offered for the remington 870 offered at Lebaron. Vented rib, rifled with canti-lever rail and a turkey barrel with his viz adjustable sights. Only available in black though.

The camo on the mossberg is perdy. Either way, I can guarantee you two things. You won't regret either purchase, and if you like shotguns, neither will be the last one you ever buy.

Well talk about perfect timing. SFRC has it for 15% off. Got it for $475 taxes and shipping in! Can't wait to get started in the world of shotguns!

While people are talking about first shotgun:

If one is looking to purchase a 12 gauge for geese hunting, 3 inch or 3.5 inch ?

I never use anything more than 3" for geese, even though one of my guns does have a 3-1/2" chamber. I don't see the point of putting up with the extra recoil, when 3" kills geese just fine.

I have a Mossberg 500 that has served me faithfully for nearly 30 years. With the field barrel and a smoothbore slug barrel I have taken squirrels, rabbit, deer, grouse, duck, pheasant, and turkey. I suck at trap but did break 21 one day, a good shooter could easily break 25 with it. Remove the plug and add an 18.5" cylinder bore and you have a great defensive firearm. Mossy 500s are great. Also, consider the Remington 870 line. Like somebody once said, they are the "Mr. Potato Head" of shotguns. There are so many accesories available for them, they can be anything for anybody. CGN is definitely a fantastic source for shotgun info, and another great site is www.shotgunworld.com . Cheers.
