Can anybody recommend a good holster maker to me? I'm looking for a good leather holster for a S&W Model 10 with a 5" barrel. This holster will be used in IDPA, so it needs to cover the trigger guard completely and retain the gun without having a thumb snap, preferably. I'm willing to spend a good amount of coin for something really nice. I just can't seem to find a holster maker who's offering anything that fits this description (lots of concealed carry holsters, cowboy stuff, and things that have thumb snaps or don't cover the trigger guard).

Experience and pretty photos welcome of course.

You can buy these and other patterns from Tandy Leather and make them yourself. I made the knife and the sheath too. Leather working is a good way to enjoy your guns when the weather is cold and the range is uninviting.

We don't do IDPA gear. Yet. Keep yer hands where I can see 'em, boys...:)
 
I googled laroche leather, then clicked the link, got to his website, clicked on holsters and then the type I was interested in.

Sent me to a yahoo website saying geocities has been closed since 2009 and then it rick rolled me!

Hey Kevin - that's a Uberti 1860 repro. Mine is awesome but I have heard there have been some sporadic QA/QC problems with them. If you ever want to buy one go on Youtube and look for a fat old guy - he does a series of videos on tuning them and they really work wonders...and - you can do them all yourself!

The patterns come from Tandy Leather and are produced by a guy named Will Ghormley. I think he has a site that you can buy from as well.
 
If you don't mind waiting a few months, Milt Sparks is THE standard that other leather holsters are compared against. Expensive and hard to get, but worth it in the end. Check them out, but do it quickly; they only accept new orders the first few days of each month. When you place your order they do tell you when the ETA is for your holster, if that helps at all.


EDIT: Looks like their backlog isn't as bad as it used to be and they take order any time now. That's a plus!

One Lung Wonder
An Uberti 1860. I have the same revolver. The only trouble I have is finding the right caps. It prefers the Remington caps. My brother has the same revolver made by Pedersoli. I would like to buy or make holsters for both. Two single rigs plus one double.

You've gotten more than a few good suggestions already but in case you need some more, I have some leather by Galco and Triple-K that I'm very satisfied with.
 
Second One Lung, I bought the patterns for myself and have gone into supplying low priced holsters to the guys in my unit. Tandy has a leather pattern for every wheel and the 1911. Including shoulder holsters, low profile, cowboy action, just simple open carry.
 
Ayup. I am building one of those pancake holsters for an incoming 1911 I have on order. Fraser could you post pics of your work? Most of my stuff is really simple and I like to admire the work of the experts.

Kevin - check out Duelist 55 on Youtube. (If I recall correctly). He is a fat old guy (like Yours Truly) - that knows these guns inside out and how to tune them. One of the first things he did was replace the factory percussion nipples with upgraded bronze ones that come from Track Of The Wolf. Then he starts tweaking the guns for reliability and function and improving the sights. I love mine and I'm sure I've sold more of them than Uberti has! The kids see how these things can shoot, how they smoke and stink...and then see how hot they get - and more than a few fall in love with them.

At first I did not like my dye jobs because it was botchy but the guys like the homespun style of it. So I carry on.

That dye job is AWESOME! It really came off on the gun belt!

Sorry for the hijack boys - one more, and I will bow out - but if you are a black powder geek or an out house leather worker ... check these guys out.

I'll PM you a source or a scan of his business card with contact info. Here's a couple he's made for me.



This one, made for my 4 5/8" SS Ruger convertable 45LC/45ACP is similar to the Lawman by Bianchi.



And this one, made for my 5 1/2" old model Vaquero and patterened along the lines of one John Wayne used in many of his movies.

Also, mention was made of Milt Sparks. The one below is one they made me, a copy of one they made for Elmer Keith .
