Hey guys...what muzzle devices are you running on your shorter barreled rifles and why? I'm curious to know what your opinions are on the various muzzle devices that we have available to us. I'd really like to hear about what you all think of the KAC KX3 and the various types of Battlecomps available, and how they've worked out for you on you 11" or less SBR. Any pros and cons between the two, and also some feedback on other manufacturers devices would be much appreciated.

On my 2 SBR's I run the Precision Armament EFAB and/or the Griffin Armament Flash/Comp. Blast and flash is about the same as a A2.

so far my favourite has been the PWS Diablo CQB...keeps the blast forward and is a pretty effective compensator, plus it looks bad ass...

i wish i could find the pic of my 7.5 setup with the PWS...but this is all i have ATM...

I have a Troy claymore on my 7.5. Throws everything down range, I like it a lot!

I have a AGW linear comp on a 10", same thing but by a different company.

IMHO the AGW is the better bang for your buck.

Does the Troy do anything to control recoil? I know that much can't be said about muzzle rise with the Troy, but do you notice any significant differences?

Not really...... I never registered that there was anything recoilish with that particular rifle, but the rifle was obnoxious, even double plugged, with an A2.... The range I shoot at the most has a roof, but open front and back.... So all the concussive blast came right back at ya.

The biggest problem IMO with Rifles shorter than 18" isn't recoil but "blast management"!

I used to run a Battlecomp on my 11.5" and it worked pretty good, it tamed the muzzle flip pretty much completely and although it was a bit loud the concussion wasn't bad. I've got a BCM on my 10.3" now and it does reduce the muzzle flip as well as the Battlecomp, it is just as loud but concussion is pretty bad... I won't keep it there, looking to try a KX5 or just go back to FH for the MK18. Might try back a battlecomp before tho, I liked it a lot, it sits on my ACR now.

KX3/KX5. Selected for blast management for CQB and use with vehicles. I find they work very well.

Any felt recoil? I've been told that the design of the KX3/KX5 actually pulls the rifle forward slightly, which counteracts the rearward force of recoil while in battery. If this is true, have you been able to notice this? Please excuse my lack of experience here, but the physics behind this theory seems to make sense...

I've got the Griffin Armamanet M4 SDII (Battlecomp clone) and it does a good job mitigating muzzle climb. Best of both worlds (Noveske KX and Battlecomp) might be the Ferfran CRD.

GA now has a Blast shield, which may be an option, MM did a good review on it & the flash comp as well.

Hey C, in terms of how loud it is, would you say that it's pretty comparable to any other comp, or do you find it a bit more discreet? I know it might be a long shot of a question, but if you've had a go with a few comps, maybe you'd be able to make out the difference...???

I use the AAC brake on all my AR's at the moment, from .223, 300 blkout and 308. All lengths of barrel. The build I'm working on now is a 8.5 in 300blkot going to be using a kx5 for that though. The AAC is awesome for the shooter as drastically reduces muzzle climb and has a decent fireball. It sucks for anyone beside me though, had a a couple people complain about the noise and concussion so far, and will shear of the targets beside me if My muzzle is out past my stall.

I can't feel a difference.

I have a Troy claymore on my 16 inch AR-10, an Allen Gunworks linear on my non restricted ACR 223 barrel, an S&J linear on my non restricted ACR 300BLK barrel, an S&J linear on my 12 inch 300BLK AR, a PWS triad on my 12 inch PWS 223 AR and a modified S&J linear on my 9mm AR. The linear brakes don't do much besides make it more comfortable to shoot by pushing the muzzle blast away from you and everyone around you, the triad holds the muzzle down slightly, it's a little louder but is still very manageable for noise. I had an S&J linear on my 6.5 inch AR and it made that rifle fairly comfortable to shoot.

The only way the linear comps could reduce muzzle rise is if they vented upwards which they don't and the only way they could reduce recoil is if they vented out the sides at a backward angle which they don't. The only way I think they help in either department is by adding mass to the muzzle.

I had a Rainier Arms mini comp and it worked very well for reducing muzzle rise and recoil but it was loud. It wasn't bad on my 14.5 inch AR but for some reason it was painful on my 12 inch AR. I'm not sure how the 2.5 inch difference in barrel length made so much difference but it didn't last more than a couple trips to the range before I put it back onto a longer barrel.

I really like the PWS triad, it has the cut between the upper opening between the forks cut a little deeper which is how it pushes down a little and it manages muzzle blast and flash decently. I don't notice recoil much on that rifle because it has always been a very smooth shooting rifle with the piston system and now I have an Enidine hydraulic buffer in it and it hardly feels like much more than a 22 now.

What length is the barrel you're working with?
