Rifled slugs in a rifled barrel? Any actual data??

I've done a few hours of reading tonight but still can't find any article with actual data on how well rifled slugs work in a rifled barrel. Know of any or have any knowledge from actual experience? I'm under the impression that it is about the same or slightly worse. I absolutely understand that non-rifled slugs work really well in rifled barrels but seem to have a tougher time finding them than the rifled slugs though, which is why I'm asking.

It was neat to learn tonight that buckshot "doughnuts" in a rifled barrel and that buckshot works a helluva lot better in smooth bore.

Certain rifled slugs are advertised to perform well in both types of barrels. If memory serves, the buckhammers and certain rottweil slugs advertise that they work well in rifled barrels as well as smooth. The bullets in the Remington accutips and core lokts have been just devastating on deer for me and are easy to come by so I have had no need to dabble in testing the rifled slugs in rifled barrels. Let us know your results when you try some.

I have tried it with good results just have to clean the lead out of the barrel a little more often .challengers work realy good in my rifle barrel Dutch

What these guys said...accutips or the federal (ie the expensive ones) work awesome in rifled barrels. that said the guy at Cabela told me challengers are very popular and they have had a lot of good comments....but I think they are for smoothbores

I've tried challengers out of a Mossberg 835 rifled. Couldn't even hit paper at 50 yards. All over the place.

Both my Winchester 1300 and Mossberg with rifled barrel love Hornady SST 2 3/4". 1-2" groups at 75 yards.

For what it is worth .. I used Buck hammers in a Winchester rifled barrel .. I do this this because I am shooting bears and want as much lead as possible .. In most cases the bear is treed and there is no long shots .. And if the bear is on the ground and there is lots of dogs around the bear .. A one ounce slug is not so apt too pass through and kill a dog .. They work for me .. And the buck hammers have a flat face ,, I have not tryed other punkin ball or foster type slugs because the buck hammers work

Hey dutchhunter, I know you are also into 20 gauge guns. Have you done this with 20's? I have no problem paying the money for good sabot slugs, but that is tempered by my desire to practice a fair bit with my gun/slug combo. I just picked up a 20 Mossy 500 with a rifled barrel and any direction toward effective yet more economical ammo is much appreciated.

I tried rifled slugs (Federal) in a fully rifled Remington 20 bore 870. First group was great! The rest of the shoot as the barrel leaded it got ugly. Getting the lead fouling out was a chore. I have only smooth bore barrels now with Foster type slugs. I am not paying the price they want for the sabot style slugs for rifled bores.

I was out today with the 20g I shot some fed sabots some hornadys and some challenges ,I had the best groups with the with the feds then the challenges with the hornadys coming in last thy shot really high and right of all the other slugs .Dutch

Thanks dutch. I just found this article from Field & Stream which is very helpful and may be of use to Lee_Enfield_Lover as well. I have been using Winchester Rackmasters in my 12 gauge smoothbore slug barrel and had no idea they are a "hybrid" slug. I am very pleased with them and according to the accompanying article they are deadly out of a rifled barrel too. At ten bucks for a box of five, I will be trying them in 20 gauge for sure.

I use challenger slugs for almost all slug work whether in smooth bore or rifled barrels. They are great and truly amazing in my rifled barrels
The slugs I use for bear are brenneke gold 3" mag 600 gr slugs. Absolutely amazing.

I have put a lot of rifled slugs through my Mossberg 535 rifled barrel

Kent Ten point 3" slugs would group 1" at 70 yards.....Only sabot that could do that was Remington Copper solids.....

I wanted a 150 yard gun and that gun couldn't throw anything consistantly that far so I sold it, Use a 20gauge with rifled barrel and shot a coyote at 150 yards this year. Good enough for me.
