Hi guys ... I'm a seasoned pistol and trap shooter but new to AR's.

I like the look of the Colt M4 and Sig M400... I want to buy my first AR but I don't want to buy something I'll regret later ...

I'm a recreational shooter, not in competition.

Can't afford the high end stuff but don't want to go cheap either ...

Can you suggest something that will last, hold some value and be a reliable, solid shooter ...

Also ... where is the best place to buy? Any deals out there?

Thanks for the help.

DD
or
Colt

If you're looking for something that'll hold value, those are *some* of your top picks in the price range of $1,000 - $2,000 range.

Spikes Tactical

Are also good, in that order.
Wolverine would be your best bet to find DD, and IRG could be your best bet for Colts.

What is your price range, and what do you want this rifle for will make suggesting one much easier.

There were a bunch of super cheap Colts brought into Canada lately. Scoop one up from the EE. 5 years ago they were $2600+. Now they are $1300!!!

Recreational shooter?

Buy whatever you like the looks of. Seriously.

Darned if I can figure out what's so crappy about my own hardware, which would be derided here as Low End.

And especially if you're going to shoot bulk ammo instead of reloading, money won't buy you MOA. Not guaranteed anyway.

Yeah, there are many here that like to poo poo non high end hardware. I think it really depends on your purpose - there have been lots of sub 1k and slightly over 1k options on the market for the last year. I have PSA and NEA (along with a 7.62x39 upper), happy with them, all under 1k. I've also seen DPMS, Olympic, Bushmaster all at that price point, fans and haters for them all. IRG has had some smoking deals the last couple years.

Lot's of good deals on ARs these days. As you want one that will last I assume you plan on keeping and using it for many years. I would look at the warranty. For example, all DD sold in Canada have their warranty handled by Wolverine Supplies regardless of where you bought it as they are the official distributor. If you buy brand X can you get it serviced under warranty in Canada? If so, who handles that servicing?

Core 15 from wanstalls are nice and they have the best warranty you can get and wanstalls is the warrenty place.

that's what ive been brainwashed to think....lol....lol...

No....but really, that's what i have come to believe

I can't speak for a variety of different brands, since I've only owned two, but for me, I've had Rock River and Daniel Defense. I found them both on the EE for good prices and have been happy with both of them. Didn't break the bank with either one, and stayed within my budget.

If you keep a keen eye on the EE, you will sometimes find the "almost more expensive" rifle listed for a very reasonable price. You just gotta be quick to get it, though...

Grab a Colt 6920 from IRG and call it a day. Everyone has a hard on for Colt so in the end it'll retain its value if you decide to get rid of it later...it's also a good AR to boot.
