Tavor Vs Type-97

To join the deafening crowd: Tavor

I think there is a home for the T97. At $1000 its a great starting point. It's something you can grow into by adding an FTU later on, and maybe someday an upgraded lower.

But the Tavor is a lot more rifle . . . for a lot more money!

The T97 should cost about $500-$600 and come with a FTU. I can't understand how anyone can justify spending $900+ tax on a rifle made in China with no warranty and no parts support then throw hundreds of dollars more into it just to fix everything they did wrong designing it in the first place.
The Norinco M305 and their M-forgery are the same with no warranty and no parts support but at least they are clones of rifles that you can get parts for. You may need to do a little fitting to get a US made part to work but at least you don't have a throw away rifle when something breaks.

I'm no huge fan of the Tavor, I've shot 4 of them and it was nothing special. I've also shot a T97 and I've stripped both rifles and can say if it was my money I'd be buying the Tavor.
I won't be buying either thouh as I'm waiting for the DT MDR to be my next bulpup. It will make both of these obsolete.

Assuming it lives up to the hype, it may. But its all dependent on the reliability, parts availability, and aftermarket support.

I have faith DT can produce a sound system, so here is to hoping!

The Flat Top Upper produced by T97.ca (M14.ca). They are also working on the LHG (Lower Hand Gaurd), beveled mag well, mag releas, and buttpad adapter.

Wow. Sounds cool. You would think that with all of this engineering going on for the Norc, it is not much of a gun to begin with.

don't flame me '97 owners, please

T97 = yes
T97 + FTU = mmmaybe
T97 + FTU, LHG, magwell, buttpad thingy, mag release = same cost as Tavor. Buy a freakin' Tavor.

And I was going to say "The Chinese Chopper", but I'm sure someone can come up with a better name.

I like the Tavor as it has kooler nicknames. Calling them the Hebrew Hammers or the Palastinian Punishers is just kool.

What cool nicknames does the Norinco have? :)

Hmmm. I smell a contest!

Nick-names for the T97?

The Norinco Freedom F*cker: Keeping Dissidents in Their Place Since 1997

The Oriental Oppressor: Making Sure You Never Hear "Tiananmen" Again

The Chicom Charger: "Do Not Worry Comrade. There are Millions Behind You!"

hahaha, nice!

I have a T97, my brother has a Tavor. I'm familiar with both via shooting, cleaning and stripping.
The T97 is so simple. It's literally 27 pieces, and can be broken down and field stripped while at the range if need be. Which is a good thing, because my T97 has had some growing pains along the way. After a few hundred rounds it shoots awesome now, and more importantly it's a lot of fun to shoot. I have an FTU and Bushnell AR223 optic on it and regularly hit within 1.5" at 100 yards. I trust it to take down a coyote if need be, and I can throw it in the back of my Rzr without worrying about it getting dirty. It may have 2-3 FTF per 100 rds, but at the end of the day it's a toy, not a battle rifle. If I FTF at the range, it's not a big deal. I fill a bunch of ACR mags and shoot until the barrel is red hot :d

The Tavor is a piece of engineering. It's intricate, well built, and well designed. It's worth the additional cash if you have it. At the time I bought my T97, I also snagged a couple other guns. If I knew then what I know now I would have grabbed an FDE Tavor and called it a day.

So the question is, do I dislike my T97?
Not at all. For around $1550 I got a cool looking gun, rail and optic that shoots well, fits my body and shooting style, and is strong enough to get bumped around in the back country. Something I may not do with a Tavor.

Either way you go, you won't be upset.

Cool nicknames and all, but they are not something I would like to represent!

Depends on your use. Range toy, slap on $25 rail from CGN sponsor and a TRS-25 gets you a cheap bullpup. First several hundred rounds no problem with right mags (factory or LAR15 orange follower). Great truck gun.

For serious competition go for tavor. Plan to upgrade to FTU...., get the Tav.

T97 like most of my guns are safe queens, most of my funds goes toward precision so pay premium base on your usage.

I've wanted a Tavor for a couple years now. It seems like in the last year and a bit, this year, and next year there will be plenty of new bull pups for people to spend their money on. My plan is to save money and wait patiently for either a sale or a steal on the EE for a Tavor as someone looks to fund their newer bull pup purchase. Now I just need to wait until after Christmas so I can rebuild my funds.
