Recoil Mod Opinions...

Good advice for everyone would be avoid the bench altogether, and shoot as hunting rifles are meant to be shot, off hand. Standing sticks / monopods are also useful, and in the field there are no benches, so beyond sighting in the scope there is little reason to shoot a hunting rifle that way. Perceived recoil will drop to half when standing compared to sitting at a bench, your field accuracy will increase drastically, and you'll probably have more fun at the range to boot.

Yep, prone position even worse. I would try standing first, with shooting stick or even a shooting tripod. While in a hunting situation, the recoil just disappears when you have a nice bull in the crosshairs. :)

Wow! So much good information! Thank you guys, I almost didn't post here for fear of ridicule... I'm so glad I did. Saved me from butchering my stock. I do need to sight in the new scope, but hopefully the low recoil ammo will help, or I will be borrowing a lead sled. After that hunting applicable shots only. And lots of practice!

Thank you to all of you who have commented so far.

The handloading suggestion for reduced loads with lighter bullets is a very good path to try out. It gives you lots of options down the road for heavier loads and heavier bullets plus it gives you loading options for other rifles.

We've all been there, some just have a harder time admitting it than others. In no time that 7 Mag will be like your .22, times flies, have fun!

Guys have nailed it with the reduced loads. The Lee hand press is good, I wish it had better handles though. For plinking and practice don't discount the dipper (scoop) that comes with Lee dies, as long as you are using the proper powder it is foolproof.

15 Ft/lbs of recoil is about what nearly everyone should be able to handle. Some people can handle much more but some people seem to enjoy getting punched in the face too.

Reduced loads as discussed, will get the OP back on track for sure; however, a nice wood stock and a high end recoil pad are never a bad idea if the OP can afford them and wants to go back to full power loads.

This. Practice for hunting shots has no place on the bench, other than sight in and finding the right hand load. Hornady sells reduced recoil ammo now, but not sure if they do 7MM.

Reminds me of my first experience. My first big game rifle was chambered in 7mm rem mag. I got it off a family member and it fit me poorly with a hockey puck for a recoil pad. I put 40+ rounds down range first session ended up a little punch drunk and loosened up a molar...... Follow the advice you have gotten here and have years of fun moving forward!!
