Hey there I'm going to mounting a Leupold VX-3 3.5-10x40mm scope on my new Winchester Model 70 rifle. I want to mount the scope as low as possible of course. So what bases and rings would you guys recommend? I want some quality bases and rings but nothing overboard. I was considering going with Leupold DD two piece bases and there standard rings, but I am unsure if I can get away with the low rings. Leupolds website recommends medium.

Thanks

Call around to see whom has a decent supply of hardware,
then pack the gal up and go for a drive.
Don't fergit yer optics.
You're down the lower mainland, so you should have a pretty
good selection.

The 40mm objective will likely preclude the use of Low rings. I like the Talley rings but to use the lightweight rings on a M70 (not exactly a light rifle) is a little questionable. DD's should do nicely and cost less than the Talleys.

Take the rifle in to Reliable with you (not on a weekend before Christmas) and see what they have and what they can hook you up with. Always nice to be able to ensure that everything fits right before you plunk down the Visa. That's where brick and mortar beats online only.

I'd be surprised if lows don't work. I've lost track of how many 3.5-10 x 40 scopes I have and they are all in low rings of one type or other.

I'm a little concerned that you use "double dovetail" and "standard rings" in the same sentence. They are different systems; on the double dovetail both rings twist-in and on the "Standard" the just front one twists in and the back loosens whenever it wants. The double dove-tails are hell for strong, you'll do well with them.

Yes a simple typing error on my part. I do know the difference. Thank you for your concern. Based on the suggestions I will go to one of my local stores during the week when it is not that busy and I can see what will work. Thank you all.

You will probably be able to find Leupold DDs locally. Never a bad choice.

If you can stand to wait a little while for rings to be shipped to you, I would encourage you to look at S&K products. One of, if not the the lightest all-steel rings available. Great aesthetics for a classic hunting rifle like the M70. Nice people to deal with. I'll post a picture below of my custom M70 FW with S&Ks holding a VX3 2.5-8x36.

The Talley steel rings are another fine choice, but I'd stay away from the LWs. Friends of mine have had them crack and I no longer trust them. One set left on a 223 that will get replaced with a rail setup ASAP.

leupold dual dovetails with low rings will fit a leupold vx-3 just fine. On a model 70, the problem is always scope tube length (personal preference) and bolt handle to ocular lens clearance. I have a couple pre-64's which will not perfectly clear the bolt handle while cycling and I have a couple newer fn produced model 70's which fit with a c-hair of ocular lens clearance.
