I'm sort of newish to handguns. I've had 1911's for a few years but those are my only exposure other than a Ruger single six as a teenager.

I'm looking to buy something in the under $1000 range in 9mm. I was thinking something with interchangeable backstraps as I don't have overly large hands and I shoot left handed.

So let 'er rip and give me your suggestions.

Thanks

If you are more partial to steel guns CZ 85's are ambi and well under 1K...no interchangeable backstraps but CZ grips don't strike me as being especially large and you can buy slim line aluminum grips aftermarket

My first pistol was a Walther PPQ, ambidextrous controls, and with the very excellent lever mag release. I highly recommend it, great trigger. A few people will complain, if they're dedicated hardcore operators of a certain platform and think all pistols must be 1911s, in which case they're probably best looking at 1911s rather that different platforms.

So far I've been on the fence with the CZ, Grand Power and M&P.
I was planning on grabbing one of the plastic fantastic but the CZ shadow is so ###y.

1911 ;)

Middle finger does the mag, trigger finger the slide release. If not for the fact that few come with an ambi safety it could pretty well have been designed as a lefty gun from the beginning.

Glock works ok for me, save for the slide release, but those look like they must suck for righties too

I have an M&P and a Ruger SR45. The Ruger is fully ambidextrous straight out if the box. I picked it up for under $500 from Jo-brooks.

Just ordered a STI Trojan with the ambi safety option for just that reason.:d

If ya use the slingshot method, you won't miss a slide release, although for a lefty manually locking back the slide would require some finger acrobatics or just swapping hands. :p

I just plink in the bullseye style, so the release isn't hard for me to hit. Locking back the slide IS easiest to do by simply swapping hands, though, as you say. Probably the safest way too, since you're probably clearing a malfunction if you have to lock it back.

I did like the Beretta for its ambi features. I just didn't like the gun much itself. I seem to be gravitating to the 1911 and revolvers for the most part. Other than a few Glocks I won't be experimenting with any more different types of pistols. Not for awhile anyway.

And, of course, single action revolvers were made for lefties :)

I'm a lefty and when I was looking to buy a pistol it came down to the PPQ, CZ85, M&P9 as my top three to try out. As mentioned the beretta was in the mix as well. I went with the M&P, although I liked the CZ the most out of all of them. The Walther PPQ was the least comfortable to shoot. Next 9mm I buy will be the CZ85 combat, great shooting pistol and ergonomically very nice to hold.

Ooops...my CZ 85 Combat has ambi controls and reversible slide stop. IMO, a completely ambidextrous pistol should not be limited to controls. The ejection port should satisfy both R/L handed shooters. And so far, only Beretta 9X/M9 and clones satisfies these parameters. If ejection port is not considered, there should be more as mentioned. Depending on the true requirement of the shooter, there are several market options to explore. Just avoid impulse buying because of a review. Check the grip, sight picture and the balance. These are my basic requirements in choosing a pistol.

Safe Shooting!

Beretta 92F, open top, mag release is reversible. Just not sure of slide stop.
