Why would my Mauser have mount holes for a scope rail?

This Mauser has the 4 holes on the receiver, looks like they are for a scope rail. I don`t understand the reasoning since the mag is loaded from the topside. Are these guns made to change over to a removable mag? Thanks, Darcy

you would load it into the mag 1 round at a time, likely a post service modification

The rear ring has been recontoured for a scope base, in addition to the drilling and tapping. One piece scope bases are only one option. Two piece bases are very common. I bet that Weaver bases #45 and #46 would fit. If you are lucky, the holes will be properly aligned.
Is that checkering on the grip?
Anyway the d&t is a common sporting modification.

I have a scoped Mauser here (vz24), and loading is as suggested: one round at a time. No fitting a charger under a scope!

Looks like someone had it drilled and tapped bu a Gunsmith to use as a sporting rifle. As suggested, check the Weaver bases to see if they will fit. Also, let's see a picture of the whole rifle ----is it in Sporter or Military stock? As a Sporting rifle, loading one round at a time in the magazine is really no inconvenience.

Some repro turret rings and bases would cover the holes nicely.

Ahhh OK..Thanks RobertMcC for the pic. I was thinking it would leave very little room to load at all. I guessed wrong. Yes it has checkering and the gun has been sporterized.

I have a weaver bag marked 46. It has numerous mounts that have the same hole spacing which will work for the front mount. The rear mount holes are 1/2 inch spacing. Could you verify which weaver base would work?

As tiriaq mentioned, #45 and 46 Weaver bases should be correct. The hole spacing looks right for them.

Weaver #45 and #46 bases on that as well. I went with classic weaver top detachable med rings with a Weaver K4 60B scope. Only because I was going for a classic/retro build.
