side by side versus under and over

SxS look good and O/U do not. SxS are for hunting and O/U are not. It's simple. Going to the range....take the O/U. Going hunting....take the SxS.

I prefer a SxS, it handles quick for me and lays flat in hand. I have owned many quality O/U's, I sold them all, I could not hit with them, they seemed slow in hand and somewhat wobbly.

I like and own both. Mine are not alike and are used for different purposes.

The o/u is longer, heavier with a single trigger, pistol grip stock and interchangeable choke tubes. It is meant for more deliberate shooting of clay targets that follow a predictable path. It is smooth and slow.

The sxs is lighter, shorter, with two triggers, an automatic safety, a straight grip and fixed chokes. It is meant for more instinctive and reactive shooting on flushing game. It is fast and dynamic.

Both are excellent for their purposes but not great at each other's. Horses for courses.

It will come down to what ever feels better in your hands. I use an o/u for all my hunting needs from turkey, to upland, to waterfowl without any issues what so ever.

So true. My wand-like 20 ga. SxS is the scourge of the thickets, but is nearly hopeless on the skeet field. Way too light and jumpy.

As to why the O/U has become the dominant double, I think much has to do with plain ol' fickle fashion. The O/U has become the "cool" gun, and like most aspects of fashion, the change may not be fully explainable. Part of the reason might be that some see the SxS as a throwback to the past; its Grand Dad's gun. It is true that those of us who prefer SxS's tend to be traditionalists at heart.

Just my 2 cents, and it may be worth less, I have 2 SxS. A BSS & a CZ. My over under is a. browning skeet gun. For simple pleasure of shooting the SxS wins. My o/u is what I usually pick for the range. All things considered how a gun fits is what counts and should outway all others when hits count

As already mentioned, the breechloading double gun, be that in SxS or O/U config usually have specific roles to play. An advantage the O/U has is that even a field model (with appropriate features) may also be utilzed for all kinds of clay shooting games, at least at an amateur level.

Like many other folks, I almost always reach out for a SxS for bird hunting and use O/U guns for clay shooting. I also use a SxS (field model with mobile chokes) that I have dedicated for fun Skeet only.

Some folks do not hesitate to deploy the SxS a bit further as the following image illustrates ..... :)

I'm... I'm... speechless...

LOL! Not just the rib. If memory serves, it's a London Best too.....not sure about the exact make. The guy is from UAE.

The attached clip (3:11) shows him with the "gimmick" :)

Apology OP, didn't mean to go off track on your thread.

I generally choose what I shoot best, irregardless of appearance, but that monstrosity is far to ugly for me to even consider shooting it.

More apologies to the OP. But, I know a competition shooter who improves his scores by reducing everybody else's. His MO is to show up late, take his time even though he's keeping everyone waiting, and using outlandish equipment. In short, anything that might distract another shooter. I can see that rib assembly rattling some shooters. (NOTE: He gets as much mileage out of distracting people with laughter as he does through frustration.)

That's just poor sportsmanship. Sad, but to some people, winning is everything.
A London best DOES NOT ensure a gentleman.

Okay Ahmed, tells us about the picture, who is he and what the hell did he do the rib on that poor SXS?

The gent in the nice red vest with the orange ISSF Skeet stripe, I believe, is Sheikh Saeed bin Marktoum bin Rashad Al Maktoum, a member of the ruling
family of Dubai and a member of the United Arab Emirates Olympic Skeet Team who participated at the last Games in London. He is described as being
a billionaire sportsman, so a London best with a high rib (similar to some used in Olympic Trap) is not a stretch a as to affordability. He owns a number
of VERY nice, high-end Berettas as well.

While he did not medal at London, I wouldn't bet against him at your local Club shoots.
