Recording Round Count on Handguns

I keep a log for my guns in Excel with the date, temperature, type of ammo how many magazines and which magazine (I've physically labelled each one of my magazines with a letter) and any failures with the type of failure. It makes it easy for me to see what works and if i'm having trouble with a specific type of ammo, or a specific magazine.

Keep in mind I'm still fairly new to shooting and all my guns are less than a year old so I'm still trying to get use to them which is why everything is tracked. It will be interesting to see by this time next year if i'm as diligent in my record keeping as I am now.

I keep a log book in my range bag and keep track of every round fired including type and if any failures occurred. I also keep records of parts and mods. It's nice to know how much I shoot per trip or competition.

Not in an OCD sense, but yes, depending what it is.
Centerfire rifles of value; I track the shots, within a box or two.
SKS I just remember how many crates I've purchased minus the left over...
Rimfires; no.
Handguns; I try and keep track of how many bags of bullets I bought in a year and then how many years I owned it, it'll give an approximate number.
Does it really matter? for handguns not much. If your worried about springs just have a few spares or change them every 2 or 3 years.
A well built gun can go a lot of rounds if cared for (much like a car), I know a guy who quit counting after a 100,000 rounds and that was over ten years ago. The gun is still accurate and reliable. I also know a guy who had a lower round count self destruct in his hand...
Personably I'm usually more concerned about people who pin point a number; either they are probably nuts and I'll have problems with them or they're lying and the gun is junk or priced higher than its worth.
But as usual, YMMV

I would feel much more comfortable with someone that has an accurate count and detailed records, than someone that claims, "Between 500 and 1000 rounds"

I keep track of the factory stuff, for reloads I track the empty canisters of powder, divide by the load volume (ie 4.6 gr per) and subtract 5% for slop. You can also count empty primer containers and subtract for spoilage.

I do for the guns I buy new,
the used ones... and especially my IPSC pistol. Not so much!
After the first match seeing the round count of the match and how many I should have used and then how many it actually took me was just to depressing.

I guess I could somewhat understand keeping a count of your rounds expended in a handgun, for a few instances.
For example, if you ran an unusual gun really hot, such as those 38 Super raceguns, or maybe if you shot metallic silhouette on a habitual basis with your magnum revolver.

maybe

I think that a lot of people listing handguns for sale on the EE think that giving a round count
is part of the description since so many other people do it. Perhaps they think that a handgun wears out
like a car.
Me, I get wary when I see an add for a " fantastic pistol, best gun I ever had I love it. Only 50 rounds through it "

So if I see a round count in an ad I take it with a grain of salt.

I guess it all depends on how many guns you own and how often you shoot them... The log book is a great idea if you bring several guns at the range...
I have only one shooter. My other Glock sits in my case as a backup for matches....so in other words I have only one pistol to worry about.

Precisions only one I make a record. I only got 1 pistol I know that round count is only 50. Only because bought new.

I buy slightly used.

I keep track of all rounds fired with all my firearms, of course it's easier with the guns I bought new. If it was bought used, I will start to log all rounds fired and if possible, will ask the previous owner the total round count and if any parts were replaced. I have a few log books for various types of firearms and they all have the same info; date of purchase, round count if bought used, date I took it out, where I shot it, # of rounds fired and what type of ammo used. When I replace any parts, I will take note with the date, part replaced, total round count.
