Expected accuracy from a Ruger 10/22 or other semi autos?

I have a friend that is looking for a 10/22 and is wondering about the accuracy. I've never shot one and prefer bolts so I can't offer much advice. I have a CZ 452 2E ZKM heavy barrel "varmint" that I can make 1" groups at 100 yards with. This is the only 22 I have any experience with (with a scope).....and my Browning Trombone.

He will be putting a scope on it and using it for grouse at 50 yards (I'm assuming he wants to make head shots?).

Should I convince him to buy a bolt gun like a Savage Mark II that should run about the same price or are there other semi autos out there with better accuracy?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here's a video that compares and contrasts the 10/22 and the 795. Their respective accuracy comparison begins at 7:14.

It should come as no surprise after watching the video that I opted for the 795. I now have 2 of them plus a model 70. They all easily shoot under an inch at 50 yards which, in my opinion, makes any miss on a grouse's head out to 25 yards shooter error, as does any miss on a body shot out to 75. (body shots out to 100 are entirely possible so long as you know your holdover; typically 6")

I have both the 10/22 and savage btvs
The 10/22 has a axiom stock and tacsol barrel. Wicked light and groups well for being semi auto. 2" and under using bulk ammo @ 50yds.
However the btvs is a fly killer at 50yds and with good ammo and no wind, sub 1" is not an issue.
Anyone getting sub 1" out of their 10/22 is welcome to show me in person on my acreage. Personally, unless its a kidd or volquartsen build, I don't believe it.

That's a bold statement! Lots of threads all over the place saying other wise but that's neither here not there haha.

Op there are lots if youtube videos and forums/threads of people doing ammo test with their rifle(s). 8541 tactial has a good youtube channel and his doing a 10/22 trainer. Good info on there.

I used to have a 10-22 that would shoot about 2-3 in at 50 yd with Mininmags before I did mods to it. If I were to buy another one that's what I would be expecting.....If accuracy is important to your buddy and he has $600, CZ512 would get him to about 1 in at 50 prior to any trigger mods (using decent quality ammo such as Minimags and shooting off a decent bench rest with a decent scope...).
ps: I am assuming he is after a semi. If he is open to a bolt action than any of the 22 cal CZs would do a great job (expect 3/4 in with decent non-target ammo)

With lots of tinkering, time, and $$ in aftermarket parts, a 10/22 can be made to be accurate. There's a slim outside chance the inbred redneck f@cks at the Ruger plant were sober the day yours came of the line, and it actually shoots well.

Any CZ you buy will be a tack driver out of the box.

Hey Scott Bear~I'll echo the sentiments here. No, I think expecting to hit a grouse head @ 50 yards with a factory 10/22 is a mistake. (leaving alone the fact that it would be a tricky shot to get off quick with any gun, any caliber) Before the HMR crowd chimes-in, yes, your guns would do it off a bench all day long...but we're talking hunting here. :)

To the question~a Marlin 795 or a Marlin 60 (same gun, only tube-fed) would be a better choice. An improved trigger ON a Marlin (tuned-up, not an aftermarket one) would make things even better. My 795 has had it's bolt polished, and it's trigger re-worked by a capable set of hands...and it's a real shooter. It was a real shooter before this work too. My advice to your friend though~pick a bolt gun, and something on the lighter side if grouse sniping is the goal. Grouse hunting is a heck of allot more hiking than shooting, so a light barrel is key. Top suggestion for me would be a CZ, maybe a Scout if he doesn't mind the short LOP, or, an American if he's a tall guy. It that's out of his price point, then perhaps the Marlin XT series, maybe even a Norinco. I have a Norinco Backpacker bolt action that is a pretty accurate gun. VERY accurate when you consider it's a $175 rifle.

seen some 10/22 shoot very well at the range, but all had major mods

I'll echo the marlin 60 vote, have 2 older marlin 60's, one stock, one with aftermarket trigger springs and some polishing, both have williams firesights....they are accurate guns with no mods required...but the trigger can be improved with minimal work...I just mounted a scope on one of them, haven't shot it yet, but want to see how small I can get the groups on paper, they get very good reviews from most folks

I have the pleasure of having my gf has a gun caddy sometimes, small game hikes are the best with her...20ga in my hand with the dogs, but if we spot something 100 yds out, she passes me the 17hmr lol..it's minute of grouse out to 150

First try with mine on bags. It shoot all 40 Thunderbolt in a 1in by 2in square at 50yards. (Using TRS-25)
Took 10rnds to sight it in.

Was real surprised.
It's a bone stock laminate.

a friend of mine is very competitive and everything has to be a "tournament" he has a sr22 which I believe is a 10/22 in a nice dress and make up on {I could be wrong feel free to correct me anyone if this is incorrect} however back to the story, whenever we go to the range together and he brings that I always take my 795 marlin because I know the "competition" is just a matter of time, lol, I smoke him every single time, I know he is a decent shot because he is more accurate with my rifle than his, my 795 has inexpensive glass, inexpensive rings and no other work done to trigger or anything, its a bare bones tack driver, I would be scared to see what a real good shooter could do with this rifle with good glass and a little trigger work!

I have a plain ruger 10/22 mossy oak stock and I put a simmons 22rimfire 4x32 scope on it.
Off hand at the range 50yards I put a few in the 9-ring. But I think partridge heads at 50 yards is expecting a lot. I never take birds at more than 20 yards and I'm confident I could get them with my ruger at that range.
My Henry H001 shoots bullseyes at 15-30yards iron sights. Nice to carry in the bush too.
I have no experience with CZ but all the boyz on here seem to love them if you have the extra coin.

Here's my 10/22@ 50yds off hand.

What's missing with most peoples expectations is ammo. Anything cheap and bulk is just that. If you want any rifle to group consistently you need to run quality ammo, specifically something match grade. I love cci but its not a match grade round(short of their match offerings). Rimfire ammo in a match flavour is rare and expensive. People need to tone down their expectations and be realistic with their performance requirements before discussing gear.

I'm the first to trash talk the lowly 10/22 but have to play fair. If your buddy wants a 10/22, let him buy one. Although I don't tolerate them on the premises, lots of folks do love them. In the long run, if decides to try something different, he can sell a used 10/22 quick n' easy. There are no shortage of fans for them. Shooting side by side, he may want a bolt before you'll want to trade your CZ.

Are there other comparable offerings? Certainly (I have a list!). Would I attest any new, comparable, semi consistantly makes 50yd headshots on Grouse with bulk ammo? I'd have to suggest that'll be more on the shooter's abilities.

Not the best groups, but this is with my CZ-455 Evolution at 50 yards.
