It works on Androidphone where hunters can see each other and dogs.

Like Garmin GPS collars.

Requires mobile data connectivity. No good for people in the bush. Cell gps is unreliable anyway - if you don't know the woods you're in, don't trust your life on a smart phone map. You can be sent in circles as your weak signal bounces around the canopy

I have Ihunt BC and Ihunt Alberta on my Ipad mini grate app's but dont know if ther is a Android version of the app worth looking into

There is, I have it (Ihunt ON). The user tools the Iphone version has are not yet available for the Android version. Coming soon I was told by the developer, sometime after Xmas. Ihunt is the best Canadian hunting App I have found. No need for cell service, the maps can be downloaded onto the device for offline use.

Cell phone gps is not a true gps. It's called agps - "assisted gps". Assisted by cell phone towers.

The data may display and appear accurate, but find out for yourself. Get a real new model Garmin and hold it side by side with your phone, then go for a walk and later compare the recorded tracks. You will be amazed

Yes, smart phones have assisted GPS.

the assisted part is on top of the sat GPS receiver.

This is better than a non assisted GPS when towers are within range. It provides higher accuracy than a non assisted GPS(handheld), faster time to first fix, requires less power and works indoors. These are not negatives in my opinion. When there is no cell tower available, your stuck with a regular non assisted GPS, just like your high end hand held unit. Although hand held GPS units generally have much better antennas and work better under less than ideal conditions.

Been there done that with 3 of my hand held units. The readings will differ within cell coverage as the AGPS will be more accurate than the handheld, especially in a large city with many tall buildings blocking and bouncing the satalite signal. Go up North, away from the cell towers and you will see they are probably within 5 meters of each other. This is my experience with my 3 different handheld GPS units compared to various phones I have owned over the years starting with an Iphone 3gs, Iphone 4, Iphone 4s, Samsung Galaxy s4 and a samsung Note.
