"It is unlawful to hunt with a set gun, or to hunt wildlife with a pump, repeating or auto-loading shotgun with a magazine capable of holding more than two shells. Where the use of a shotgun is allowed for hunting or trapping big game, an unplugged shotgun holding more than 2 shells and firing single projectiles only (slugs) may be used."

I got confused...... I have a shot gun, pump action, the tube can hold 4 shells, my friends said I need to modify the tube to make it only able to hold 2 shells....or it is illegal to hunt with it....

bu my understanding was, there are so many shot guns in the shop can hold more than that......so long as you only put 2 shells in the tube, should we be good ?????

and ......I can not understand the laws quite well, doesn't it says" no AUTO loading with MAGAZINE CABABLE of holding more than 2 shells"

mine is not auto load and it is a tube but not magazine..... and it still applys to my shotgun ??

Thanks for any explanation...

Technically you have to restrict your mag tube to hold 2 shells, if it is capable of holding more. So you can have max one in the pipe, and two in the magazine, when hunting.

Many shotguns come with a metal rod or some other means to restrict the capacity. You could use a 3/4" wood dowel cut to the right length in a pinch, or something like that.

First you posted;

"a magazine capable of holding more than two shells"

You also posted

Obviously your gun has a magazine that is capable of holding more than two shells, so no, you can't legally hunt with it as is..

Reading your own quote, it actually specifies

a pump, repeating or auto-loading shotgun with a magazine capable of holding more than two shells.

Your posted that your shotgun is a pump action, and pump action is specifically listed in the regulation, so obviously the regulation applies to your shotgun.

As for your shotgun not having a magazine, that tube that you posted about, that holds four rounds, is a magazine.

thanks.....I think the answer is use some block to limit the tube to only 2 shells....no matter it is a tube or magazine , whether auto load or pump action.....

yes, I did pass the hunting course....that is two years ago....but ...kind of forgot....about the word "CAPABLE" and not wanting to believe my eyes when seeing the rules again, ... good thing is I had never get a chance to go hunting with my shotgun yet....so, have not broken the law yet...
Good that I talked with my friend today!

Thanks to all!

I don't get the confusion...
if you have multiple projectile shells the gun can only have 2 in the mag (tube) and one in the pipe.
Single projectiles allow you to unplug..
However, if you are un-plugged you should not be in possession of multiple projectile shells.

naw bro you're good just put a plug in the magazine tube. Your shotgun may come with one, if not, just use some dowling. It doesn't have to be permanently modified, even a clean stick would do in a pinch.

Here in BC this rule only applies to migratory federal birds I believe, grouse too maybe, but for large game you're fine with unplugged.

Your post is totally confusing. Not sure what you are trying to say when you say you can be unplugged if using single projectiles? Put it simple. If you are out hunting birds the gun must be plugged no matter how many shells you have on hand.

This law can vary tremendously by province.

In Ontario; If you are in the woods with a shotgun, you are hunting. And if you are hunting with a shotgun in Ontario, you are limited to 2+1.

Other provinces are much more lenient with their restrictions. Unplugged tubes for deer hunting, or pop can shooting etc.
But in Ontario; there's no leeway at all.

1. If your Big Game hunting with slugs you can have more than two slugs in your mag tube.
2. If your hunting small game, or using anything other than slugs you must have your magazine plugged so it will only hold two shells.
3. You can make a dowel from wood or buy one from most hunting stores, cut it to length, screw off cap and insert it in front of mag tube making your Shotgun incapable of holding more than two shells in the magazine tube.

what he said
slugs... there's no mag limit in BC
shot... 2 in the mag + 1 in the chamber
if you lose or miss or forget your tube plug, cut a tree branch and trim it to size. It happens to me too often :D

(In Ontario). The CO's in this area often carry a short length of green, garden hose with a Sharpie mark(s) on it to signify the appropriate spacing for the magazine. If they check your gun and the hose goes past the mark(s) then it would seem that you are in violation. They may then choose to disassemble the gun and check for a plug. As you know, there are different lengths for two 2.75" shells, and two 3.5" shells. Their 'test hose' accounts for this.

Magazine (tube mag or otherwise) can hold as many as you like for TARGET, but your Provincial Regs will specify for HUNTING.
Like others have said, use the supplied plug or make a dowel. DON'T go into the woods without.
