The .270 Win club, are you in?

Been in the club for many, many years. [several 700's, a M70, a BSA, a Tikka and a Vanguard]

Made my longest successful shot on a mule deer with a M700CDL in 270 Winchester.

Right now, my stable has a super-accurate Weatherby Vanguard in 270 that is waiting to slay something, lol.

I have a ruger #1b, a pre 64 m70 and a kimber mountain ascent chambered in 270 win. Just got my 1st blacktail with the mountain ascent, last weekend of the season. cheers pete.
 
I joined the club many years ago. As a young guy I read a lot of old outdoor life magazines at my grandmothers place in the country. I took a liking to jack O'Connor and the fact that he was a huge fan of the model 70 in .270 Win.
So naturally when the time came for me to buy a deer rifle I chose the Winchester model 70 pre '64 featherweight in .270Win.
I have been in love with te gun since the day I picked it up. Nothing is more wonderful than taking it out of the safe for deer season every year.
I have always reccomended the caliber to friends and colleagues.

Here is mine, savage 114 american classic. I'm glad I read this post, I've been thinking of selling her. I bought it for my moose rifle but then second guessed my decision. Now I'm settled it's staying with me. Thanks guys.
 
One of my best 270 Winchester groups.



The rifle rarely shot larger than 3/4" groups. I am just not a synthetic stock guy, so another member is shooting small groups with it now.

It was not hard to let it go, as my experience is that 270 rifles routinely seem to be very accurate.

Sold my 270 Win. and then realized that I had nearly a couple thousand .277 bullets so I had a 270/08 built and I love it.
It trails my old 270 for velocity.... but not by much.

Hi mate.
My 270win would be doing what your 270 08 does. If i could or may in future is build a 27 08 as it seems perfect for me.

With 45gr of 2208 in a long 270 case theres alot of room in there.... an would be a full load for the 08 case....

I est 2850/2900 fps mv with a 24 tube an 130gr corelokts... i estimate my trajectory off this but fine tune by actual range shooting.

App

2.25 high at 100m
Approx +/- at 200m
15 inch low at 300m
Off top of head cant remember 400m drop but 30 inch or so

Aproximates but as you can see , it works on the Deer very well to 350m tested.

Interesting to see an hear more about hunting with the 2708

Ackley was of the opinion that the .277-08 was among the best wildcats that could be considered within that class of cartridge. With all the interest in short action, mountain rifles, its surprising this one isn't more popular.

Might have something to do with the popularity of the .260 and 7-08... unless you have 2K bullets on your bench, the others are as good or better... and more commonly available.

Bill Leeper steered me onto it.
I bought a NIB Remington 700 Ti in 260 Rem and out of the box it wouldn't group at all with any 6.5 bullet weight actually keyholing some.
After checking it out Bill told me the barrel had rippled rifling and he asked me what to do.
My response was " surprise me " and guess what .... I have a beautiful shooting 270/08.
It weighs about 3 or 4 oz.more than original weight and gives up nothing to a 7/08 or a 260 for that matter..

Did he rebarrel or rebore... since it was heavier after, I assume rebarrel.
