Vortex scopes - opinions

My leupold 2-7x33mm, may actually be messed up again and not holding its adjustment.

Not leaking nitrogen but it sure makes me think maybe sometimes it doesn't matter how good of a rep the scope manufacturer has, things break sometimes and no ones immune.

I saw a 6.5-20x44mm forsale on wholesale sports for 349.99$ regular 499.99$. Seems like a decent deal to me.

I'm a vortex fan all the way. The best way to decide for yourself is to go and handle each optic you are considering. Compare apples to apples (price point). I'm sure you'll see that vortex outshines their competitors by far in comparable price points and features. I bought a broken pst 1-4 on EE here. Sent it in for replacement (no questions asked) and had a brand new one two weeks later in hand (scope went to guelph to USA back to guelph then to my door). Very happy with product and customer service.

I have a few Vortex optics, so far so good. Had a horrible experience with Leupold about a year ago and sold all of them except one on my 375 Rum.

Everything made by man will eventually break, people dealing with it at Leupold let me down. If i am buying customer service and warranty then i want it. If not i will take a so far bullet proof bic lighter brand like Vortex and get over the counter replacement instead of 7 months with no solution.

If you're a leupold guy you won't like them. They are great and all but a lower price point without the same quality as leupold.
Personally I would liken them to the old baush & lomb scopes.

Leupold is far over rated tho imho.

The best example or comparison i can come up with on this is.

Honda ATV fanatics , these are the folks who buy honda ATV's regardless of anything the market says or has and believe in them as the best , Above all else.
They will often tell you Yamaha (for example) is horrible even when Yamaha is having far less failure rates than honda is in the last years past , Even when Yamaha is far more powerful in a similar platform somehow the honda fanatics will swear up and down that honda is better than all regardless of whats infront of them statistically.

This is how i look at some scope bias factions, Leupold or otherwise , Because Fanboys will be Fanboys and they will definitely be 1000% bias in every way shape or form.

How else would 1200+$ scopes ever make any sales let alone 2000$ + Scopes.

Fanboys man.

thats how.

Not trying to ruffle feathers but that is the dang truth how i see it and how ive seen it for years and years.
And i've been duped by these biases in the past also believed the hype and wasted the hard earned cash on something that wasn't as good as i was lead to believe or imagine it would be!.

Leonard- your criticism on Leupolds is that people like them more than other cheaper made scopes and your proof is an anecdote reguarding atv's???

Have you owned a higher end leupold?

My point was fanboy types will inflate any company's reputation exponentially.

Its like that with all kinds of products in this world.

Im not saying leupold makes bad scopes the same way i'm not saying honda makes bad cars or ATV's ect.

So what we end up with is overrated opinions or reviews because often fanboys don't look at price as a negative tick while reviewing their purchase.

I used ATV's as an analogy purely because have you ever asked someone what ATV they think is best? most times they will tell you its the one they own and then proceed to tell you exactly why that is.

If you look at some of the prices on the scope market vortex with all their faults seem's to be at least on the right path price wise anyhow lol, many others are getting ridiculously expensive and more so every year.

How do you figure Vortex is better value for the money than Leupold? They make cheap scopes(Crossfire) and very expensive ones (Razor) just like Leupold. Check the prices.

That is a rant . I hope you feel better.

I dunno.... I'd be weary of any manufacture who most famous attribute is its warranty...

I have two Leupold scopes... I doubt I'll ever have to rely on warranty.

For serious hunting scopes (as opposed to casual backyard plinking use) I stick almost exclusively with Leupold (have a couple of Zeiss as well). Out of dozens of Leupolds I have needed warranty work a couple of times, and it was handled fast and well. Out of two mid-range Vortex products I've tried, I've needed warranty work four times. I'm not a statistician...doesn't that work out to a 200% failure rate?

I've used vortex optics exclusively for the past . . . five years now? Could be six.

That's nice. I've hunted with Leupold optics almost exclusively for the past...four decades now? No, closer to four-and-a-half. Complete satisfaction. I've never actually hunted with Vortex optics (even if I had wanted to...) because the first example stopped functioning before I got it sighted in. The second one never worked right out of the box...and then failed again upon return from warranty service before being mounted...and then developed a completely different problem before 100 rounds were fired...

I actually wish the warranty were no good. At least then I could have just given up and chalked it up to a lesson learned, before wasting all that time. After they decided to simply replace them, I sold both without trying them. Couldn't take any more disappointment.

the first time to the range with my one and only vortex it broke. great warenty. i sold the replacement new in box. my other scopes are luep, minox, sightron, one meoptra and a older elete 4200.

Here's the Vortex story as I see it. They are made in foreign countries, China, Korea, Japan, etc. The cost to produce there is lower than here in North America. That's one of the major reasons their prices are so attractive. Also, they pack their optics full of features that make also make them attractive to the consumer. Then their warranty is so attractive, and it is able to be offered due to their low cost of production. There are two ways to look at the warranty. Option A: Vortex trusts their product so well they are guaranteeing it for life. Issues will be few and far between, with little replacement. Option B: Vortex trusts their success/fail ratio enough that they are able to sell a product with this warranty knowing full well that scopes will fail but since they are selling enough at a certain profit margin they can afford to replace the product "no questions asked". IMO their stance is option B. I bought Leupold instead of Vortex. I knowingly paid more for a similar product, and it did have slightly less features. These features were not of great importance to me (illumination, zero stop) so it didn't impact my decision. This is my opinion, based on quite a bit of research. This is why my rifle wears a Mark 4 instead of a PST.

This^^^^^^^^^^^^^. The profit margin is so high that they can afford to replace a broken one with a brand new one no matter how many gets returned.

I have 2 Vipers one 3-9 on the smoke pole, and a 4-12 on the .270. So fare I love them both. I would assume warranty will be used down the road, but I am unable to buy a Nightforce scope. I like how the BDC works, as it lines up real good with the .270 and my reloads, and they line up decent with the .50. I would like to get another 4-12 Viper for my HMR as my old 6-24 Bausch and Lomb is getting quite dark these days. I have seen a $2000 Leupold die after 1 box of 300wsm. I think he went to a Bushnell 6500 on it.

Personal experience: I love mine, great optic.

I can outfit three guns for the price of one "high end" optic,
they track perfectly,
they are clear,
If I ever break it, I can get a new one free.

what is not to like?

oh wait, some people like having the nicest toys, but never actually shoot them.
what good is an S+B if you have no ammo?

*for those that have the nice toys and the cash to use them.... can I come too?

My business runs all Mark4 optics since I started using them in competition 15 years ago. Never had to use the warranty with the Mark4 units. Mind you because of my own stupidity, I elbowed a VariX? Fixed 10x off the bench and broke/snapped the reticle. I mailed it to Korth in Okotoks, AB and 2 weeks later all was fixed and they techie dudes emailed me it's progress along the repair process. That was back in 2003 or so. :)

I don't know what their service is like lately because I've never had to use them (knock on wood...)

Recently a contact from Petawawa who wears multi-cam for work dropped by an ORA CQB match with his (yes, he owns one) NEA 14.5" carbine mounted with a Sparc and he happened to WIN the match (placed #1 overall) and he convinced me to look into a Vortex Sparc II. I happen to have one of them mounted on my CQB rig right now. This coming season, I shall run that SparcII for the CQB fun and come up with some feedback and information/report on how make out.

I did take that SparcII hunting for rifle/deer season this past November and I loved it! So far so good!

So I'm keeping an open mind towards the Vortex SparcII even if I am one of them Leupold Fanboys.

Cheers and keep helping them nooobies out there!

Barney
