My only Savage rimfire is a Mk2 G, picked it up super cheap at a black friday sale. Shoots excellent, even in -22c weather!
That's good news as they are nice stocks !! Except for the Pro varmints I guess .
I have a savage 93R17 FVSS, put it in a boyd's stock with some DIP stuff, shot great before and after....also have owned a 22wmr and 22lr mark ii, both were heavy barrels, both shot great right out of the box
only savage rimfire I've owned that doesn't shoot accurately is a mark ii G with sporter barrel and factory wood stock (doesn't seem to be offered on boyd's website?)...action screws set at 15 in lb, rear screw is indented into wood, which is about as hard as playdough, bottom metal is warped...shoots an amazing 1" at 25 yds...

They are made in Canada, they shoot great and they are well made. But in IMO they are darne ugly and they exploite the wow factore to much for me. I'm more of a classic rifle kind of guy. So if you like them and they fit you well, you will be well served. People love their Savage's exepte for the mags...

+1 on the mag issue..my MK11 shoots well..not overly impressed with accuracy past 25yds. If someone had a 10/22 I would lean towards the Ruger for magazine swap..but I really like the look of the heavy barrel Savage.
The problem withe the mag that popcorns...is you are replacing with a mag that is just as poorly designed and poorly manufactured as the last one. Shame really because the rest of the gun is very nice.

All of the 17 ammo is of high quality so it should shoot well with almost anything. My 22 mag Savage BTVSS with Bushnell 4-12x40 will usually shoot 3/4" at 100yds depending on how well I shoot that day and the 17 should shoot better yet. Watch for mags that empty themselves and need the feed lips bent in a little.
Just because in may be a Boyd's stock does not mean I will not need bedding and floating because mine sure did. When bedding, watch the front action post as it only half sits on the stock. The accutrigger is nice but you may need to return it to the shop for re-work if you ever hope to see a 2 1/2lbs pull.

I posted this over in the Optics section on another matter, but here is my Savage MkII BTVS in 22lr, my third Savage rifle...
This is what I did with my ####ty scope today at 92 meters with Winchester white box 22s... The lower right target is a personal best.
The targets are at 100 yards and the small squares are 1". Very little wind. I'm working on my groups I shout 50 rounds in about 1-1/4 hour and the bottom right is the best group of 10.
I am also considering Savage BTVS in 17HMR but may try a CZ455 in 17HMR just to see what they are all about. Probably going to drop $300 to $700 on optics for the BTVS in 22lr first.....

The mag on one of my Savages failed the other day. Cartridges would spring out. Comparing it to a good one I noticed the feed lips were slightly further apart. I gripped the body of the defective mag with pliers just below the lips and gave a little squeeze. There was an audible click and now it works fine. Though for how long who knows. Savage is aware of the mag problem and will send you a new one if you call them.
Other than the mags, the guns are great. Very accurate at any range.

I have two pretty basic savage 93s. the .22 is on wood, the 17HMR is on synthetic. The stock just holds a barreled action, trigger, and in my case scope so you can shoot them, and I really don't care if the stock is pretty. Both shoot OK - the 17 seems more consistent wrt point of impact, but that could be the ammo and/or the wobbly bench at the range I frequent (no, I don't shake, really, I don't.. well, maybe a little)
Regarding Savage accuracy, here are my results from a club match today. Range: 100 yds. 5 shots per bull. (I made a big mental error and only shot 3 on one of them. Gaach!) The gun is a Savage BTVSS, ammo is Lapua Center X. Score and group size for each target shown. The coin is a 25 cent piece. The outside diameter of the 10 ring (the dark one) is 1.25".

My first rimfire was a Lakefield Mk II. I loved it so much I have purchased 4 Savage rifles (both rimfire and centre fire) since then and never been disappointed.
Currently, my favourite rimfire is my 93F .22WMR. Pulled the plastic off it and replaced it with a classic blonde Boyds. It's beautiful and extremely accurate.
I don't shoot targets much with it, but I have hit 62 hares in the head with it so far this season, at ranges anywhere from 10 yards to 80 yards.
Never had any magazine issues with any of my Lakefield/Savage rimfires. I hear a lot of complaints, so I guess I am lucky.

Thats some fine shooting Jim V. I am finding even shooting the bulk ammo can provide some good accuracy at 100m, but maybe a few more fliers than one would like. Shooting sub 1.5moa at 100m with a 22 is very good practice indeed. My heavy barreled model ii is a fine shooter as well. And will tune you up for some F class folleys.....

Savages I have owned just don't fit my hands as well as my CZ's do , you might find the
opposite . I shoot Stock Sporter class benchrest with my Varmint CZ's . The stock rides
the bag best . If you are freehand shooting a thinner lighter stock might be better .

Already have a CZ in 17Hmr, and it's a really accurate shooter - can the savage keep up?
Maybe I'll set this one up as a short range gopher/squirrel gun.
Could always scare them to death!
I've looked at them in the shop that I help out in, they really are nice rifles.
I have a Mk II BV and a CZ 452 (both .22 RF). I really can't say that one shoots any better than the other.
