This arrived in the mail today, Mosin #3 in the safe. Im interested to here what you guys can tell me about it as the buyer didn't have much info for me. Taking it to the range tomorrow to see how it shoots, I'll post a follow up once I get some rounds through it.

My Izhevsk sniper is one of my favorite rifles for sure. Very easy to sight it in and as accurate as my eyes are. One tip I read somewhere, while looking through the scope, at the bottom you can see a ghost image of the front post sight. It's difficult to find for some people but it's there. Line it up with the vertical bar of the reticle for the perfect shot.

Very nice, where did you score that?

posted a WTB thread on the EE, had a couple rifles offered up. Westrifle has some clones too

Good to know thanks!

Congrats! Great find! IMHO this is a genuine refurbished sniper rifle. Enjoy her and keep her:) Your scope may very well be original to the rifle. It was made in Kazan' plant in 1944 and has been overhauled at some point.
I am waiting on beautiful Tula sniper rifle which I found(to my astonishment) in a shop in small town in Newfoundland. These are still around, but I doubt that any more of these coming into Canada...

UPDATE

Didn't make it to the range, but did take it down to get more info on it. Turns out its a Molot from 2012

Appears to be an original stock

Previous owner must have used bricks instead of bags for bench rests!

At sometime a refinish was attempted, this stain is EVERYWHERE, barrel bands, rear sight, mag and even the receiver.

Can anyone tell me the significance of this number? Doesn't match any of the others

These numbers representing the batch or lot of steel used for production of this barrel.

Thanks!

Hopefully taking it out to the range on monday, I'll be sure to update with how it works. Aside from the stock it seems to be in great condition, this winter I think I'll strip and restore the wood.

There are both amber and clear shellac, the amber is very reddish as the coats multiply. The clear just enhances the natural wood finish, I use both in various wood working/art projects on the regular. Very different look between the clear and amber versions.

It looks brown but its actually contaminated garnet shellac. It was applied by the arsenal after refurb & by molot after they scratched the crap out of the stock getting the hanguard off to mark the barrel.
