700X with 9mm 147gn LEAD

Hey guys,

I have been reloading my 9mm 147gn Lead RN rounds with 4.0gn of Redot for a while now, but I cannot get ahold of Redot anymore... I got a hold of tightgroup, but it hasn't been playing well with lead. I managed to find a lb of 700X. It looks like it should be fine, but I can't find load DATA does anyone have load DATA for 700X and Lead 147gn? Shooting out of a M&P9.

Lyman Manual 49th edition states:
147gr (#2 Alloy) 1.058" OA (BC:0.73, SD:.166)
700X Start 2.7gr(803fps) 26,500psi, Max 3.3gr (921fps) 32,200psi
Titegroup Start 2.5gr (870fps), Max 2.8gr (943fps)

I would be more than happy to take that titegroup off your hands :)

I don't know which load you intend to use, and the kind of press; maybe your powder lot will behave differently from mine.

Try it in a realistic way and check the loads (reloading sends vibrations to all equipment on your bench and usually settles powder, just working a measure doesn't) .

If I was left with 700X only for the 9, I would make a dipper from a 9/380/38 case and drop each load with it. The problem with the Auto-Disk is a constant height and shrinking width of the measuring holes.
This would beat checking each drop on a scale.

I've done ok with 800x in the autodisk using the adjustable charge bar - but only on charges above 5gr. Below 5 gr is a different story.
 
For 9mm at 147gn projectile, 3N38 is more fun and it meters very well. I tried it last weekend with 6.0gn and 6.3gn charges and it shoots consistently, cleaner and no sign of over pressure. Lately, I got bored shooting 9mm loads and 3N38 brings back the fun with my 9mm pistol. It feels like shooting a .40S&W and very snappy.
 
I load TiteGroup with cast lead bullets and it meters perfectly and shoots well.

What problem do you see with it?

I have used a lot of 700X because I had two 12 lb caddies of it. Used it all up in handguns. Made excellent target loads.
 
700x is just a bit faster than Bullseye in burn speed and performance. 800X is a bit slower than Unique and perhaps not quite as versatile as Unique but very useful.
If you had 700X and 800x in hand you can load everything from 25acp to 44 mag and not have to give up much in performance. I've been using 800x in 44 special loads for years.
The 800X should be a good powder for low velocity cast bullets in rifles - similar to unique and blue dot, but i haven't tried it yet.
 
Before you buy 700X or 800X (or unique) be aware that it is a flake powder and does not meter well in some powder throwers. I use a Redding BR for most applications and it will not meter flake at all. It binds up. For flake powders I switch to a Lyman 55, and it works perfectly.

The two powders that would give similar versatility as 700X and 800X, and meter well are Clays and Clays Universal, but they are not in stock these days.

Two other powders that would give similar versatility would be Bullseye and Unique. But it doesn't matter because they aren't in stock either. :)

I guess the whole point of this thread is that 700X is available and having any useful powder is better than nothing.
