Post your Mountain Rifle

Buying a lightweight rifle and putting a heavy scope on it isn't exactly off-track. We're discussing lightweight/ultralight rifles and the topic of appropriate glass, or in Ardent's case the lack of glass, is entirely germane to the discussion.

I guess I was more referring to the manner in which you addressed that issue. What someone chooses to top their rifle with is entirely their own decision and I'm sure that if he wanted your opinion on his glass choice he would of asked.

Factory first generation titanium in 260, factory BDL bottom metal, timney trigger, aluminum shroud, Wildcat Fiberglas in the model 7 pattern with a 0.8" decelerator, talley ultralights in extra low, vx2 3-9x40 with LR reticle. Best part is, this is the best shooting titanium I have ever owned, and does so with no pressure point - in my experience that's rare with the pencil barrels. As mentioned earlier, I have put together lighter rifles in the past but this one I am happy with just the way it is.

The break was a non-issue for me as it came with a thread protector and tool for brake removal, your choice, it's two ounces lighter without the brake than my scale pic. Overall I still think it's a fantastic value at 4lb 13ozs without brake, that makes even ultralights and titaniums look portly.

Thanks Ardent, that clarifies as to why the Ascent was so close in weight to my NULA...I was scratching my head on that one.
I never have and probably never will carry a non-repeating rifle in the field, but by god if I ever did I would give my left nut for that one. Gorgeous!

Mine is a:
Winchester M70 Featherweight Classic in 6.5x55 shortened barrel 2" to just 19 1/2" and fitted with an elevation adjustable hooded front sight to be used with a weaver rail as the rear, 3-9x40 Bushnel Elite mil-dot on removable rings. Here is my "mountain" rifle. It is a slenderized and slabbed M600 Action with a new bolt handle and fluted bolt.
Shilen 1-10 twist pencil barrel, 22" Chambered in 6mm BR
McMillan Lightweight Synthetic. Leupold Ultralight 3x9 EFR.
It tips the scales at 5lb 9 oz empty.
A very "Catholic" rifle, it shoots several hunting bullets very well. [90 Scirocco, 85 & 95 Partition, 90AB, 80 TTSX, etc]
It's not been sheep or goat hunting yet, but I smacked a nice muley a couple of years ago at 345 yards with the 90 Scirocco....DRT. Bullet exited through the ribs.
Regards, Dave.

That one looks all business. Nice to see the 22" barrel on there.
Classy little rifle Dave!

Very Nice rifle Dave BUT should have have left the Dog Leg Bolt on it ( JMO) - Much more character and its still functional too ! JMO Cheers RJ

Who knows what that finish will look like after years in the mountains, it also adds several ounces of weight to the stock, so no idea why they don't offer it in standard black like the Montana.
That was also one of my reservations, especially what mosquito repellent would do to it, as I wear it often.

I suspect the camo is so there to distinguish it from the Montana, same with the Adirondack. Kimber knows that for the added $1000 they need to make it look as different as possible.

Here's my "Foothills Rifle",.... haven't hunted the real mountains......yet.

Rem 700 "A" Prefix action, #2 Shilen, 9" twist at 23" chambered in 280AI in a McMillan Mountain Rifle pattern Edge, Rifle Basix trigger. With 3.5-10 gunmetal grey Leupold it's about 7-1/4 lbs.

Not a super lightweight but it seems to work OK.

I've got a bit of a mountain rifle fetish

6.5 Creedmoor Stiller action 5lb 13oz naked
270WSM Defiance action 6lb 3 oz naked
7mm RM Pre64 M70 action 6lb 6oz naked
.338WM Defiance Action 6lb 12oz naked

I'm not a huge fan of the super light-weights...something in the 6-6.5 pound range seems to fit me just perfectly.

What scopes are those on your nice rifles?? Thanks!

Well this on isn't as high tech and modern as most of the ones in this post, but it sevrves me just fine. It's a 1965 Remington 600 308win.action has been bedded, trigger recall been done and tuned down to about 2 lbs, barrel is free floated.plastic trigger Gaurd replaced with CNC Aluminum trigger gaurd. Custom machined aluminum base, weaver grand slam rings. Leupold VX1 3-9x40 scope. Gun weights about 6.5 lbs complete.

I have a lightweight, but it likely never will see a mountain...

Sako 75 Finnlight, re-barreled to a 21" .260 Rem. re-profiled from a Shilen #7 to a Leeper #1...:)
In the McEdge stock it weighs 5lb 13oz, and right around 7lbs with leupold rings and a VXIII 2.5-8.

(pics prior to scope and ring change)
