Hey guys,

Looking into buying my first 1911 as am getting old and starting to get turned on by metal guns :p

I love the old school classic 1911 look and am thinking of the new Colt 1991. What are your opinions on the new Colts? Accuracy, quality and reliability.

I looked at Colts for collector value but decided I wanted to shoot more than look at it..

I went STI but there are a ton of 1911 options I'd say equel to or better than Colt and for less money..

I've personally owned only two 1911s. One was a Longslide AMT Hardballer (Terminator) it was one high strung 45! One day wonderful groups the next unexplainable split groups!?!? Long since gone-con.

The second one that I still own, is a decent 1991A1 Colt in brushed ss. Fixed sights, and pretty reliable with good magazines, and plenty enough accurate with 200 gr lead SWC in handloads, 6 o'clock hold @25 yards.

Yes, it's an 80s series (whatever) and I bought it around XMas here on CGN at a good price.

Edit: I'll tell you what though, reliable 10 rd mags are a pipe dream IMO. This is literally throwing money away.
Even the 8 rd magazines, purchase the best brand name you can afford. And still expect the odd jam.

Never seen any myself, but conceivably there are 1911 manufacturers with which I'm not familiar.

Colt's never built a better pistol than they do right now. The 1991s, the XSEs, the Rail Guns...they're some of the best guns anybody is building at the non-custom level.

If you blueprint a Colt right now and compare stuff most people don't understand and can't measure - like the exact orientation of the magwell, for instance, or the exact placement of the slide stop hole - Colt knows what they are doing and WHY, and they're doing it better than almost anyone. You do get the odd gun that's shipped out screwed up by someone, like any other manufacturer...but Colt builds the 1911s I'd bet on, for a lot of reasons.

If their custom shop would get caught up, I'd take one of their current guns over anything but a Wilson or a full custom from a major smith like Berryhill etc.

Love my Colt Gold Cup Trophy, very tight pistol and excellent finition, along the way i will buy another model of Colt... JP.

I went old school and bought the WWI model. It's so pretty that I don't even want to shoot it, so I shoot the Remington R1 instead (lovely pistol, especially after you gut the series 80 stuff)

I'd like to buy either a series 70 government, or a Gold Cup. I like the GI style, though, with the simple sights, spur hammer and A1 grip safety.

Not to dis the STI but I wish I had not jumped on the Black Friday sale and saved for the colt instead. The Trojan is nice enough. Just not a character gun. I like my SR and R1 as much or more.

The 1991 Is a good value Colt. I recently purchased the new series 70. Right around 1,000.00. Nice pistol and superbly finished. My Rock Island, Tisas, and Cimarron are every bit as reliable and accurate as my Colt, for less than half the cost. My used, beater Norinco compares favorably though it has a lot of wear. If I was up there in Canada I would have a fleet of Norincos. Have another Rock on its way.

^Did not know there was such an animal as the 'new series 70?'
