Well went out for my first official coyote hunt of the year and it was a success....kind of.....I guess it depends on how you look at it... oh well that's hunting......

Started off setting up way too far from the main bush but the wind didn't give me much choice besides I was hoping any coyotes coming out of the bush would follow the little swampy fence line separating the fields right to me.... (Forgot to take a picture of this setup) but....
I put my ecaller/decoy out and about 30 yds to my left and then started off with my hand calls screaming out with some dying rabbit sounds.... Screaming for 30-40 seconds and then went silent for about minute, changed up my call to a little bigger one to get the sound way out there. Again 30-40 seconds of screaming dying rabbit then go silent.... 30 seconds go by and the first coyote shows itself and then the second comes out. Two coyotes about 400 yds out in the field but not coming my way, they are looking but don't venture too far out from the treeline. I try a few different sounds but no....they don't follow my script and turn back into the bush. I continue to call on and off for the next 15 mins or so and they don't show up so decide to pack it up and move to the other end of the property....

On this second set the wind is much better for me so I setup my usual 150 yds away from the main bush and set my caller/decoy out and about 30 yds to my left. I start off with a loud screaming dying rabbit wait a bit and nothing shows, so try it again and low and behold there is a fence post in the middle of the field that wasn't there a minute ago.... I slowly place my head on the scope and zoom in, yes a coyote about 100 yds away looking at my decoy.... I decide to take the shot before he thinks about leaving. I take my time line him up and squeeze the trigger.....nothing happening.... safety on...er.... I click off the safety but just as I am getting settled on him again an itchy trigger lets a round off before the cross hairs are completely settled causing the bullet to miss its mark.... Coyote fever set in ....
He started running across and down the field, lined up a second shot (thought I hit him by his body movement) but he turned and entered the bush at full speed. I went over to have a look, found no blood, no hair, nothing... so I guess it was a complete miss...

For a first outing it was nice, but it didn't finish the way I hoped.... Maybe tomorrow...

Happy Hunting to all

Great story. The other day a buddy mentioned that I never miss, since I send him or post pics when I get them. I told him I don't usually take pictures of my misses. Maybe I should start!

Nice try Fratri

I too missed on my very first shot at a coyote this year. Mine was about 60-70 from me though. lol I guess I was to excited to see what my first 243 kill was going to be like I guess. :)

Just have to ask though. :D Have you shot this rifle since last year?

cheers

I target practice with it throughout the year.....it was me, pulled on the trigger before I had the cross-hairs resting on his chest..... Not the first time but still sucks.

I have hit them out to 340 yards and I've missed a few at less than 50. In my mind your hunt was a success. You've got them coming out to a decent shooting distance. Wait till they come blazing in so fast that you cant even get a shot off. That's frustrating! Keep at er. I find coyote hunting the most fun you can have with a gun.

If you've ever had the chance to knock the fur off a coyote you then realize just how small the kill spot on a coyote is. I always chuckle at the threads you see that are discussing what is the best caliber to shoot coyotes out to 600 yards.
