The shadow is by far the most popular 'production' gun for competing.
When it comes to competition though, it really depends what division you plan on competing in. In standard, or for say 3 gun, the most popular is a 2011 type handgun.
The way I did it (with no regrets) was to start with a glock. Parts/accessories and mags are available cheap (big used market) and the gun will make a great self-defense home gun when you upgrade to something else. The glock won't hold you back at all until you're ready to move on.
