Competition pistol options?

The shadow is by far the most popular 'production' gun for competing.

When it comes to competition though, it really depends what division you plan on competing in. In standard, or for say 3 gun, the most popular is a 2011 type handgun.

The way I did it (with no regrets) was to start with a glock. Parts/accessories and mags are available cheap (big used market) and the gun will make a great self-defense home gun when you upgrade to something else. The glock won't hold you back at all until you're ready to move on.
 
get a go with a 17 or a shadow in production. once you get the game figured out, move on in standard with a 2011 or a customized G35.

in production a lot of peoples jumps on the CZ or TANFO band wagon because the trigger advantage they provides in stock trim over a stock G17. just remember, in production there's a 5lbs trigger weight break rule which is easily achieved with little work on the guns mentionned including the G17 . the standard class open the door on SA's and mods .

I started to shoot Production division with my Glock 17 for over two years then moved onto CZ shadow. Glock is always a good pistol to start your shooting sport journey.

Phone ahead to find out when they are the least busy. Go then even if it doesn't fit your plans. By going at a less busy time you can take more time to shoot and to switch guns. You'll also be able to get more pointers out of the RO standing by you if they don't have a room full of people waiting to shoot.

The Speed Steel shot once per month at Mission R&G has rimfire classes for both regular iron sights and those that mount red dots. And Abbotsford has a similar Steel Challenge that is also rimfire friendly.

Most of the other matches like Cowboy Action, IPSC and IDPA specifically do not allow rimfire ammo.

There is also the classic bullseye shooting mentioned already. But it's a slower pace compared to the two steel meets mentioned.

Don't write off bullseye either. I planned on ipsc with a cz shadow and ended up in .22 bullseye. I have a lot of work to do in bullseye before I start up anything in action shooting. The skills you learn in bullseye will make you a better shooter and even the cost of shooting .22 adds up faster than you think

Basic safety stuff like clearing faults as well as sight alignment and form are easier to work on in a controlled slower moving environment. Ipsc looks fun and I still want to try it one day but for now I'm glad I ran in to the bullseye guys first

Agreed, the basics are good regardless of how you get them.

I'm sorry if I made it sound like I'm against classic bullseye. The action shooting is still my first love but some days it's nice to work on the basics and aim for the tight groups too.
 
For production division, I would suggest CZ or Grand Power X Calibur.
Classics division, STI Trojan.
Cause I have all 3.
 
me too, and a S&W 625 for revolver division lol. Just started IPSC last year though, so going to stick with production division for a while.

.40 is the only way to go to be competitive... But shooting 9mm in Classic is a decent starting place.

And the guy who won the world shoot this year went minor (although I heard he kinda regrets the choice).
