Moved this post from hunting an sporting because it belongs here

What's the general thoughts on these

I'm going to do one up for a hog, deer and coyote gun

I'm definitally going to be running hard cast bullet reloads almost exclusively
Anybody have experience with casts in these for hunting

I've heard that the barrels were held in by a set screw only but I've been told by many people that claim to have taken them appart that that's just an old wives tale
Any confermation

And whats the value on one of these if it's beautifully restored and is in great mechanical shape

Thanks and merry Christmas

The set screw does not retain the barrel. It might prevent the barrel from turning on its threads.
I suspect that one that is beautifully restored would be worth little more than one in decent original condition.

The Cooey Carcano is "strong as bull": http://www.milsurps.com/content.php?r=303-Myth-Busted-Proof-Testing-an-Eaton-Carcano-Rifle

Here's how it is assembled (as Tiriaq suggested):

L to R: barrel; barrel stub and set screw; and receiver.

I don't see these as ever being worth more than $300, more typically it's $200 with most of the value in the set trigger mechanism.

As for loads, any published 6.5X52 load is more than safe. I size the RCBS 150 gr 270 mold (#270-150-SP) down to 0.270" using a custom sizer die:

I have also used the Lee 170 gr Special Order Mold from Midsouth: http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.c...ish_170_Grain_Double_Cavity_Reproduction_Mold with decent results.

What's your accuracy been like with .270 sized bullets I'm courious as I was looking into buying a push through sizer to bring it down to .269 and in your opinion what stabilizes better 145 grain or 162 grain

I would say a fairly decent one is a $100 rifle, all day. People that want $200 plus are out to lunch.
They are a neat little rifle, chambered in a great cartridge.

Cheers

They both stabilize, but I found the 150 gr bullet shot a bit better. I'd recommend buying the MidSouth Lee Mold - it's not expensive and might drop at the 0.269" you need.

I thought the Cooey Carcano's were chambered in 6.5 x54 Mannlicher.

They are, he was referring to the original caliber 6.5x52 and how you can interchange powder loads because there similar, as for the bullet itself you want to drop casts about 0.270 in diameter and has nothing to do with the 270 Winchester(which has a head diameter of 0.277)

Get yourself a take off 303 barrel from a #1 or 4 and get it threaded to the receiver, short chambered and ream it to 7.62X39 - uses same stripper clips no mods to action even use same stock. 311 diameter so milsurp works fine.

A member on this forum made me up one like this. I'll let him chime in if he wants. Fun gun, cheap to shoot and still has the no.1 sights on barrel. I fitted it to a supplies stock since the origional ones were very prone to cracking, being fashioned from cut up surplus stocks and held together with fish glue haha.

I own a second one in the origional chambering that someone made up a solid Birdseye maple stock for. Gorgeous rifle I really should shoot a lot more. Going to try to get a peep sight rigged up for it.

if anybody is willing to do one for me id be glad to pay for one that shoots tight groups and that i would be able to interchange the 6.5x54 and 7.62x39 barrels back and forth considering it takes no action mods.shot me a pm if you or someone you know will

only reason i want to interchange is because in southern ontario i can shoot 6.5x54ms at coyotes but i cant with 7.62x39.so the 6.5x54ms ammo would be saved for hunting and i would use the 7.62x39 for a plinker and cool bolt gun(we can fire any cal at targets but anything above .275 in diameter at animals and ohhhhhh,i can shoot at a running coyote with a 270 wsm but if i use a 7.62x39 im in deep s#!t)
