Hello,

I am in the process of a complete clean of a '54 SKS. I just want to know what everyone recommends for refinishing the hardware(buttcap, screws, sling mount). I was thinking of tremclad flat black? Or is there anything better out there.

Thanks

How 'bout having some fun experimenting with plating and other cool coatings and finishes? Try looking at the Eastwood home plating and coating kits. Lots of options like blackening and other electro-finishes. The kits are easy to use, and there are lots if kits that mimic dangerous-to-do-yourself finishes like chrome and nickel.

Caswell does lots as well, including bluing.

One last thought. I have recently discovered "crinkle finish" black in a spray bomb. Looks great and works well with a thoroughly prepared surface. Probably not great on tiny pieces, but never tried.

Why not just cold blue? One other thing that looks really good is hitting the "bbq paint" with a buffing wheel and black polish. I did one sks receiver and barrel like that and it ended up looking like a dark bluing.

removed all the paint
primed with metal etching primer (yellow primer)
painted with VHT sating black paint (roll bar automotive paint)

looks great and solid

Any pics?

should have done the screws too
a bit of dust on it but it looks 300% better than before
and looks better in person than on this pic... white dots are only dust
before painting it, it was half peeling varnish on top of the old paint
manage to scrape off with a small knife as it was so dry
