3 to 9 is decent for that range. Easit to track if you miss first shot and they bolt

Get a spotting scope to see bullet holes on paper.......Rifle scopes are for shooting game.....too much power in a rifle scope often defeats the purpose of having proper magnification for hunting distances.......ie too much power for the distance game is normally encountered.
This is just one opinion from an old guy with a little experience.

I don't think much of an AO scope for hunting purposes either.
If one is prone to buy an AO, get the side focus rather than the AO focus ring.

For hunting 3-9 will work great. Target shooting not so much IMO. I smoke coyotes no problem with a 3-9x40 Bushnell Elite.

I felt the same need as you to have some extra magnification. You can get it without losing out on the 3x bottom end, but you are going to need to spend some coin to get both.
Swaro has a 6x and March 10x, but now that the Leopold VX6 is available you can get the extra magnification without the mortgage payments.
In the end, I hauled around a massive, heavy scope and didn't get any benefit from the 18x.
