my dad picked up a FN Herstal Five-seveN this last summer but i wasnt able to meet up with him and have a look at it until this week.
wowsers is that a neat little gun!
it is soooooo different then any other pistol ive handled and shot that it is definitely in a league of its own.
is it a good league or a bad league..... i dont know yet, but its definitely a neat league!
right off the get go the gun just 'feels' strange in the hands.
its ALL plastic!
well, not plastic but what passes as plastic in the gun world - polymer.
while the barrel and internal parts are all metal everything is covered in polymer which gives the gun a very 'toy feel'.
that plastic feel coupled with the weight of the pistol at only 1.3 pounds it makes for a very strange feeling gun.
the stippling on the grip is the most aggressive i have ever felt on any gun, i would almost say it borders on painful when you are gripping the gun hard. now this is going to be hard to explain - but the gun feels big, and it is big, but only on the grip. the bullets are like miniture .223 bullets so they are long so the mags are extra long which in turn makes the grip of the gun extra long from back to front.
so its big to hold but not like a Glock where the grip is just fat but its extra long from forward to back to accommodate the bullets which makes for a extra strange feel in the hand.
so what do we have so far.
well, we have a strange feeling gun.
its strange because its big in the grip, its strange because its all plastic, its strange because its so light.
so if we left now we would leave with a bad taste about this gun and we would never come back to it.
but in walks the deal breaker.... the cartridge.
the strange 5.7x28mm bullet is mind blowing!
im not going to bore anyone with its concept and how it came into being because that is what Google and Wikipedia are for so you can go read up on it on your own time, but wow...... wow dosnt even cover this..... holy hell wow is this a neat round!
it is seriously a miniature .223 round!
you are basically shooting a rifle round with a pistol!
but that isnt the mind blowing feature of this gun, where it messes with your mind is when you shoot it..... there is NO RECOIL!
ya, i just said that!
NO RECOIL!
your shooting a round that is trucking along so fast that is can penetrate bullet proof vests, its one of the flattest shooting rounds out there, when you pull the trigger its a FIRE BREATHING DRAGON, it kicks out a concussion wave very similar to shooting a 460 or 500 S&W Magnum..... yet there is no recoil.
ya, i just blew your mind.
i didnt believe it, i had heard about it, i had been told about it but until you saddle up behind one and let her buck you dont know anything about it.
it is a trip!
i was giggling like a school girl!
(ok, a big hairy school girl with a beard, but school girl non the less)
so my conclusion;
gun - very cool!
will i ever buy one.
no.
very expensive gun and very expensive ammo and very very hard to find ammo.
but it is definitely one of THE neatest and nicest shooting guns i have EVER shot, and what that round can do to its target makes it super hella cool.
IF the day ever came along where the price on these dropped down to around $1000 and the ammo became readily available for a reasonable price AND i could pick up the rifle version of this gun (PS-90) i would pick it all up and i would clear out 1/2 my collection of guns and i would be a super happy camper.
super neat gun, dont pass up a chance to try one if you can, its worth going out of your way to try.
