hey guys

Today was indeed very disappointing. I was shooting my DA Socom 18 when first shot a very aggressive round went off, blew the bottom of my magazine out, lots of smoke and a casing stuck in the chamber. I was shooting Tulammo - which seems loaded pretty hot. The end of the case was chewed off and I found it on the ground without a primer attached.

I will include a pick of the case in the chamber. Any suggestions on how to remove this? I will check to see if a gunsmith can help me.
I tried to pull it out with some needle nosed pliers, but no luck.

I'm guessing I should no longer use that ammo as well. A fellow shooter at the range suggested that a brass case would not split like that - and I agree

disappointed, cause I do enjoy shooting this rifle. I hope it can be fixed without permanent damage!

From the look of urs u could probally use a pin punch and bend some of the casing inwards to be able to break it free or to move it so you can get something to grab ahold of it. Oiling it to help it move out can help as well

Had this happen before when i used tula 308. something was up with oal I was getting backed out primers cause of headspace issues oddly enough norinco and my retail/reloads had no issues

Had a similar problem with a 858 and steel case. Had a friendly member tap and thread the remaining case, and pull it put that way. That said, I have no experience with the broken shell extractor.

thanks guys! I'll try to do the removal myself when I have a moment - possibly saving me a trip to the gunsmith. Buying one of those tools could be a good investment. If not using it again for myself, I could be somebody's hero at the range in the future! lol

Could try a screw extractor? Can find them at any hardware stores, autoparts store, theyre meant to drill the center of a broken bolt and it inserts and thread in LH so it can bite in un threading the broken headed bolt,

Google Image "ruptured case extractor". That's what I pass around at my M14 clinics for the attendees, it's designed to be inserted into the remains of the upper half of the torn case and as you Knox the case extractor forward, a tapered core forces a collar with a triangular and circular ridge to "bite" into the neck and or shoulders of the case half. The. A jointed Rod or a cleaning rod can be inserted From the muzzle and push that case extractor rearward to the bolt face as its biting into the upper half of that stuck pied of brass.

Wow that's a lot of typing in my iPhone. Best ten bucks I ever spent. It's alwaus in my "Oh Shzt Kit"

Cheers, Barney.

Slide a cleaning rod down your bore and screw on a 40/45cal bore brush once it's poking out the bore. Pull that brush into the chamber/cartridge then tap it back out toward's the bolt. The bristles might have enough in the to push it out. If that doesn't work pull it back into the chamber but go deeper into the neck area and try to tap it out again.
You might scrap the bore brush but it should come out.

A broken case extractor is considered a must have for NM competitors. I threw one in my range bag hoping I'll never use it. Part of the M14 fun is the groovy tools you can get for them.

Chance favors the prepared.

Pbfbfbfffft! Piece of cake! Fact is I would just take it to the smith and not bother with it. He makes a fast buck, you get the job done right the first time and maybe ask for a quick inspection while you have the gun in.

My attitude to my M1A is that it was designed around a specific cartridge at specific power levels and that is what it will shoot while I own it. My reloads are right out of the book or right off the M14 forum and they perform exactly as advertised. Why screw with success? The advanced gurus are and that is fine with me...I am quite content to let the experts take the risks because they know what they're getting into and I just don't. For me it's match ammo or nothin'!
