So, I may have a coyote problem.

Depending on how close your neighbors are and whether you have outside cats (assuming your best friend lives inside). Get a kill snare, skin the first one and tack it up on the fence. YouTube the details on how to use it, it's not rocket science and being that it's a kill snare ...the hippies can pound sand with that 'cruelty' crap.
Macabre...yes. But I'm guessing it'll slow them down a tad

In Alberta, at least, illegal unless you have a trappers license.

Grizz

Snares and poison meat are illegal in Ontario. Poison meat, I suspect, is illegal everywhere. Using either will get you arrested.
In the Ottawa Valley, you likely have wolves and coyotes. You will never be rid of either. The wolves will deal with Wiley. They really dislike one another. Wolves go out of their way to kill coyotes.
Meanwhile, no letting your old dog or cats out alone. Wiley isn't interested in you, but he's not afraid of you either. He's quite content to live in your back yard. I've seen 'em, years ago, in downtown Mississauga(well at Derry and Tompkin and 25ish years ago. Couple klicks from Pearson. Close enough). Hence the problem.
Treating him like a bear is a good analogy, but he really doesn't care what you do. Try spreading some blood meal around.

I don't think I have the heart to poison anything. If I get the chance, those coyotes might die from lead poisoning. So what's my best option? I'm guessing no to the .22, so that leaves the SKS or the 12g. I have a variety of ammo for either.

I'm currently getting a mosin built for hunting. They are cheap. If you need a bit more bang, pick one up at can tire. Your situation an sks or slug from the 12g should be sufficient.

Good on ya. I have had them kill animals on my front yard and one time they came after my dog. Even in my angriest moments I could not get to the point of poisoning. Any buckshot or even BBs in a full choke shotgun is uber deadly on coyotes.

Hard to argue with this advice. We had some coyotes that were getting a little too bold and trying to lure our dogs off the yard. Three coyotes fell to the .22 in less than a week and what was left decided our property was not as fun as it once was, and they now rarely stop to see what is happening at our place.;)

As I understand it, there is a smartness difference between western and eastern yotes. Eastern are generally smarter and not as easy to fool.

I'm no coyote expert but from what I know eastern coyote is part wolf. This would explain why they are smart. As Ardent stated wolves are super smart so if the local coyotes have wolf blood in their veins....
I wouldn't line up one of the local coyotes with a .22, I'm sure it will kill them but youd better have perfect shot placement.

The ones around me have some wolf blood in them so the ones near weasel will as well. The township has pretty much asked us to kill on sight any coyotes. They are a huge problem this year. Even so bad as to take down full sized meat cows.

a 22 rimfire right in the ribs with kill them quik .I was surprised the other day got a new burn barrel for the paper waste and shot some holes in it with the 22 and the bullets went right thru both sides of the steel right thru the barrel .most people under estimate the 22 rimfire .Never use any kind of poison that is just wrong Dutch

Heard about those hybrids. Time will tell if they show up again.

@crash: It does suck about the ski hill. The kids had been getting lessons at Calabogie the last few years and got their own gear last year. We were looking forward to trying it out as we live close enough for the car to not even warm up!

you likely drive by my place or near enough to meet up for a coffee sometime. I am kinda in between the two hills.

if my dogs life was in danger or in jeopardy in any way, I'd be on sniper duty with full fire power and or any other means possible 24/7 until problem solved legal or not in the area! It's the very least that I could do for him!

Out here in Manitoba if you have a big game tag you're entitled to one coyote or wolf, or if you have a trapper's license you're good to go so long as they're in season. Out here the coyotes are pretty invasive, and if you have kids around I'd rather be safe than sorry. So long as the SKS is sighted in it'll do the job. And as previously stated, don't poison.
