Post your Mountain Rifle

Built by Tactical Ordnance. 6.25 lbs, Remington 700 LH Action in 308, Maclennan SS barrel, High-Tech stock. Bedded. Leupold 1-4

Nothing exotic, Remington 700 Mountain SS with a Leupold VX2 2-7X33 and Talley Lightweights. I just put this together with some custom machining to flute and lighten the bolt. My goal was to be at 7lbs or less all in with a tight budget. It ended up right at 7lb 0.2oz. and $1360 all in. It took quite a bit of load development, around 130rds, but she really likes Berger 168gr vld and H4350, under an inch at 100 and 1.5-2.5" at 300yds.

Looks good Dre, almost the same setup as mine.

It started as a mountain lss, I got it on the EE with a bell+carlson Alaskan ti stock. It's now wearing a leupold VX-2 3-9x40 in Talley lightweights and the trigger tuned up by guntech.

Fully dressed she's 7lbs 2oz and a total cost of $1100.

Who did the work on your bolt? I'd like to have mine done at some point as well.

Cheers,
Brad

That's cheap for a nice set-up. I bought mine on EE as well, near new with only a handfull of rounds through it. These stocks are not that light and the rifle can be almost a lb lighter with a Wildcat or similar, but I love the way it shoots, it is very comfortable. Light enough though and solid stock. The machining on the bolt was done by myself on a mill at work, its hard to see in the pic, but there are 4 straight flutes in the bolt body. The handle is easy and quick, but the flutes take a long time if you do them on a manual mill, especially for a rookie operator :). Total weight loss from the 4hrs or so of machining was 1.6 oz, not much, but it looks cool. I might order an aluminum bolt shroud one day and put it a couple of ounces under 7lbs.

Rifles Inca 300 WinMag. I've been very pleased with the accuracy from this rifle. Scope is a Swarovski 4-12x50 with the BR Rec.

I also have a 300wsm Browning Ti that is probably my most used mountain rifle. It fits me personally very well, and its always hard to leave it home. Nice to see so many people posting so many nice mountain rifles.

[/IMG] This is my first two groups I shot with Reloads. The tighter group is the 2nd group I shot, after I settled in a bit on the bench. 60 gr of H4831sc and 130 gr burger hunting bullets. Not bad for a Mountain Ascent. Shots were taking at 100yds.

Let me know what you find for irons…..I'd be interested in something the same on my Kimber Montana 84m in .308
…..

I was pretty smitten with the mountain ascent, I think I'll pick one up again. I do need to find a way to fit good irons to it, hunt irons only and would like to get some good adjustable sights on one.

Here are a couple photos of mine.

As mentioned earlier, it was a mountain LSS that I got with a bell and carlson stock. The total cost, including the scope, Talley lightweights, and trigger work by guntech was $1100 even. Quite pleasing to me for the amount of rifle!

I'll be out today testing a new load of 110gr TTSX.

Cheers,
Brad

Here is my 260ai I built. This one goes 6 pounds 8 ounces with a 20 min rail on it. Not bad considering its wearing a 22 inch number 3 barrel and a plain Jane b&c stock.

I've got parts ordered to spin together a similar rig in 7-08ai not sure what stock I will put it in though. Maybe a wildcat lightweight.

Mines bone stock compared to some of these beauties, but I like it so far. It's a 700 mountain, 7-08, action has been bedded the base is an aluminum weaver 20 moa, Leupold rings with a 3-9x33 ultralight optics with the aluminum lens caps (sits a little high, but I May swap them out soon, although it's comfortable the way it is) and a butler creek strap. It will get the job done well. The only thing I still may do eventually is swap out the stock to a Bell and Carlson and I may swap out the trigger, have a Timney and a Rifle Basix kicking around that I may toss in it, but it does have a decent trigger right now, breaking at 3.5 lbs nice and crisp. As it sit right now, at a nice 7.25lbs

Some real nice rifles in this thread guys.
I've been bitten by the bug and put my Blaser R93 on the EE, and will look for something in a custom when/if it sells (shameless plug).

Anyone here own the pricier customs? Rifles Inc., Bansner, McMillan, Jarrett? I'd like to get some opinions from owners. I know Sun and Steel has a NULA, I'm thinking maybe not Ultralight, but something in the sub 7 lb range bare, in a 300 or 338 Win Mag.

Classy looking rifle!. I dig the blonde laminate, really seems to make the stainless pop.
Scope height does seem excessive though as you already stated.
DNZ game reaper low height in silver would do great,as would low Talleys in silver, which along with being much lighter and lower would also make it easier to thumb cartridges into the mag then the DNZ.

I think that's a classy looking rifle too - but I'm a sucker for wood and stainless. How does it shoot with that skinny barrel?
