The No8 Mk1 is a .22 rifle.
It made sense regarding the front sight.....Dad was a firearms instructor with the Air Cadets for many years...Looks like a few things were 'gathered' along the way..
No No. 8's at any CF Cadet Corps. Air and Sea Cadets lost real firearms in the early 80's.
Nothing to do with your da having a box of stuff. We all have one of those. You end up with stuff you have no idea where it came from and sometimes what it is.

We were all UK based and the Air Cadets there did use the No8 Mk1..Many days spent at Pirbright & Bisley ranges..Shooting was his passion from 1947 to the early 90's at which point he stopped..Since he passed, we've uncovered all sorts of various items.........It has everything to do with him leaving us boxes of neat little stuff...
Sorry, no.....Screws, sears, sights, swivels, etc. etc..Mainly Enfield No1 / No4 items & Webley stuff...Nothing in the way of butts / handguards etc..
