New Rifle

I think that the rifle choice should be one of the determining factors in caliber choice.
I own and use both the 270 Win. and the 270 WSM, my win is a pre 64 M70, a beautiful rifle
but heavy to carry compared to my WSM which is a Kimber Classic. I have carried the Kimber
more than the M70 because it is so light and handy, it is a beautiful rifle that makes good use of the WSM
in it's compact action and overall proportions, it is everything a WSM should be, this is the main difference between the two calibers
and of coarse there is a power advantage in favor of the WSM, we should not underestimate the ballistic advantage
of the WSM for long range work. I recently had the opportunity to shoot at 500 meters with the 270 WSM loaded with
140gr Accubond bullets and it's trajectory is very beneficial at times when we estimate a little short or if
the wind is not what we thought it was, that small ballistic advantage can make the difference in a hit or a miss.

I would build a 270 Wby if it were me but if you really want a lightweight rifle then you will have to make trade offs with barrel length, action length, magazine capacity etc. Personally in your situation I would scour the interwebz until I found a First Gen Remington Ti in 270 Win, like the one I didn't buy years ago at Chilcotin Guns in Williams Lake (because I'm stupid).
 
Well Im also considering a Kimber... My wife basically said if I was gonna do a lightweight rifle money shouldnt be a factor... So to me that says I can spend what I want.. lol

So now after looking at some of the Kimber's I have other choices in calibers depending on the model.. For example the one kimber I like comes in 7mm-08 or .308 And I really dont know a lot about either of those cailbers either or compared them to .270

Basically Im wanting a nice lighter weight rifle for long backpacking trips that if needed could handle taking something up to the size of an elk.. Something that can reach out a few hundred yards with no problems..
 
I decided on the 270wsm for my mountain rifle, and since I reload it is not a issue. Although you will pay in the recoil department. I am happy with the extra couple of hundred feet per second for the wsm over the 270 and I have it sighted in for my mountain rifle with a 300yrd zero so I do not have to worry about it. It does make it useless for a deer rifle, but I have other guns for the bush.
 
Ya I have my ruger as my main hunting rifle chambered in 30-06.

270/30-06 are pretty close.

270WSM gives you similar to 7RM.

270 WSM ammo is available at Canadian Tire. It is more money than 270 Win ammo, but if you handload it's a non issue.
 
i have had a couple of 270 wsm's and don't like they only held two down. i like to carry on an empty chamber and prefer the larger capacity of the 270. don't really think there is much difference on the ballistics in the field.
 
Like I said.. Im open to suggestions on other calibers.. My biggest goal is a lighter rifle than what I have now but something that can reach out if needed..

What rifle is it that you have? I have the T3 and its holds three down

Why does it make it useless as a deer rifle?
