if you could only have one rifle for hunting what would it be?

Apart from the "holier than thou" talk down to attitudes of some on this thread, I've actually enjoyed it! One reason is that it confirms a lot that I'm currently writing about on my blog: "One Rifle and One Bullet for all Big Game". That's "Big Game". I haven't disclosed my choice yet... that's upcoming, but it is a tough call.

I'm a figurin' that yer chosen caliber is in the .35 to .375 range.:) If I were fortunate enough to hunt outside
of North America, I would go with a 6.5x55 and use 160 gr. solids on the big stuff (Where allowed.) & soft points on the rest.

For where I do my hunting, the .375 Winchester is dandy.;)

For me it would be my kimber classic 84L in 270 win. Topped with a swarovski Z3 that is in the mail as I type. If I did not have caliber restrictions for my coyote hunting in southern ontario then I would probably opt for the same gun in 280 AI or 30-06. But 130 gr accubonds for coyote, wolf, deer, caribou, black bear and 130 gr barnes TTSX for moose and elk will do the trick in the 270

Second choice would be 300 win mag. Realistically I think it is the most ideal all round cartridge available. Loaded with a 180 gr barnes or accubond it is extremely flat shooting and will take almost anything in the world. However for the extra recoil, and heavier overall gun I prefer my 270 much more

for what I do at my age now at this time in my life, and if I sadly had to choose just one gun, I think I'd choose my 7mm-08 in my Browning Micro Medallion for venison hunting purposes only. All other guns for target shooting and varmint eliminator are not included in this choice, right? Just the main meat getter, if I get this correctly!

As the title implies, if you could only have one rifle for all of your hunting requirements what would that one rifle be? My choice would be my M 70 chambered in .375 H & H topped with a Leupold VX III 1.5 - 6X with Leupold QD rings. You could hunt any game animal in the World with this from coyotes to elephants IMO.
Weatherby Mark V, chambered for the 300 Weatherby, Swarvoski 3x14x50.

boy you folks sure enjoy recoil !!!........338,340,375 omg [lol] .......the average guy doesn't have the time or money for exotic hunts [ are we being realistic or are we dreaming here people ].......from mice to moose and bears go with a tikka in 6.5 [ ? ] or if ya want go with a 30 caliber.......and get good with it !

I don't know....I'm semi-retired now, but pretty much an "average guy", work with my hands, on the tools, on construction sites. Hunted around North America, two African countries, and intend to do at least a few more "exotic" hunts. It just depends upon how much you want it, how focussed you are on achieving it, and how much assorted mundane crap you can dispense with in your life. Sure, in far-off hunt camps you meet doctors, lawyers and businessmen...but you also meet electricians, plumbers and lots of other working stiffs.

Pardon the highjack. I already voted (switch-barrel rifle for maximum versatility), but since that obvious option seems to be surprisingly unpopular, I'll answer in the same spirit everyone else is, i.e. one rifle/cartridge. Only one choice here for me... it has to be the .375H&H, probably in a model 70.

I couldn't agree more!

The way I see it, the reason that it isn't a more popular answer is that for most of us it isn't a real question. That would only change if there was a law mandating that we could only own one rifle. As it is, its just a hypothetical question split between people who aren't going to do it all, and those that don't want to do it with one rifle anyway.

Is there such a thing as an "automated sticky response"? If so, this answer should be turned into one...so that, each time this thread/question resurrects itself, this perfect reply ^ is posted!
