Thinking of getting back into IPSC. Sold my Colt 1911 few years ago and thought the Sig might be a good way to get back in without breaking the bank. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I shot my Black Badge course with an XO... Still have it (I just don't shoot it much). I wouldn't recommend it for IPSC. Mine was failing after 2-3000 rounds and I had to go for new ignition parts after my course.

if I knew then what I know now, I wouldn't go .45 ACP for IPSC; ammo is too expensive.

I would suggest you puchase an STI Trojan in 9mm or .40 if you want to shoot Classic Division. .40 is generally considered to offer a competitive advantage over 9mm (major vs. minor scoring), but if you are starting out a competitive advantage probably doesn't mean that much to you.

The big cost in IPSC is ammunition to practice and develop your skills. Spending a bit more on a quality pistol from a dealer with excellent support (I.e. Freedom Ventures) will serve your interests in the long run.

Have you considered a CZ? You should still be able to pickup a 85 combat for around $600. Still very much a dependable and proven platform. Depends partly on what division you want to compete in. Classic? Production?

if shooting production, an m&p or a glock are great starters as well. something to be said about being able to compete right out of the box with smallest possible investment :)

Thanks for the input. IPSC for me is more social now than competitive, I love the .45 and enjoy reloading. When you say sig was failing and ignition parts req, did you mean you had to replace firing pin and spring?

I have an M&P 9 with about 600 rds through it. Not a single issue with it. But not sure if a "plastic gun" will hold up. Any info on the .45 version. Thanks!

No. Hammer follow. Sear, spring, and hammer replacement.

I would also suggest shooting production where everyone shoots minor, usually 9mm. Ammo will definitely be the biggest cost in the long run. I found even if I reloaded shooting 45 ACP was still expensive.

Rent or borrow a Smith and Wesson M&P, Glock, CZ Shadow, STI in 40 S&W and buy the one that fits your hand the best. Sig 226 is a good gun but the design really isn't suited for competition, similar to driving a jeep in a Formula One race you could have the best jeep in the world but it won't do that well on a F1 track.

If you're totally in love with the 1911 platform, which I can relate, the STI's in 40 S&W are sweet shooters. It will put you in Limited/Standard.

Lots of good advice, I have always been a .45 die hard, started IPSC with a pre A1 1911 then moved to a Para 14-45 then a certain grand master told me if I wanted to compete I needed to switch to a .40. I have shot everything shy of 9mm. Been out of the game for a while but remember the days of shooting 48 matches a year and have been all over the world, a GM I will never be so shoot what feels good, .45 has no replacement and dont disregard the plastic gun, I teach with a G22, 10 years ago I would have agreed with you, today I have become.........lets say versatile, forget economics just enjoy the game :)

it will, and your m&p9 is perfect for production - speaking from experience i own one and a friend has been using one for years without any issues. if you decide to go with a production gun (m&p/glock etc), 9mm makes sense both economically as well as division wise because all of production is scored as minor.

if however you just want to shoot 45 and thats it, you can use it in any of the divisions - nothing in the rules will stop you from doing so specifically. i have no experience with the 45 m&p so can't speak to it.
