Who is shooting lead? Who is shooting jacketed?

Just want to get a feel for what everyone is shooting? Semi wad cutters? Hollow point jackets? What are you using ? Benefits? Pitfalls?

I cast the same bullet for 45ACP and 45 Colt...a 452" round nose 230 grain, I use a Lead/Antimony/Tin alloy and they are accurate and no leading of the barrels.
Tried 210 grain Semi-wad cutters but couldn't get them to feed in the semi-autos and they are not very accurate in the SAA's.
Prior to casting I was using Berry's copper plated 452 RN 230 gr from Budget Shooter Supply.

I run FMJ's in my HK USP 45 Tactical. It has polygonal rifling and apparently cast bullets can cause kabooms in them if they aren't cast hard enough. It's one of the reasons I am going back to my beloved 1911. Cast lead is cheap and accurate if you take the proper care when reloading them.

lead in everything, plated if i can find it cheap, jacketed only if i find it on sale for plated prices (happens occasionally, but not for a long time)
At the end of the day lead shoots at least as accurate as jacketed, and ussually more so untill you hit full magnum velocities. If it's the right alloy and lubed correctly it doesn't foul/lead and it's cheap!

Plated is nice in revolvers as it shoots much cleaner in regard to fouling around the cylinder area but i'm quite happy to shoot lead in them as well.

I shoot lead through glocks and just keep an eye on bore condition, I've yet to find one that leads measurably in less the 3-400 rounds.

Shooting lead i can load3-4 round for every jacketed reload...casting will up this number...plated 2-3 for each jacketed round..why pay more for no increase in performance?

As for bullet type, in 1911, i prefer 200 gn semi wadcutters, they feed in every one i own and shoot very well. The only exception would be the 625, in which i prefer a round nose or conical to speed reloads with moon clips.

9mm gets either truncuated cone or round nose for feeding. 40 the same. 38 spl gets round nose for the revolvers i use to compete, usually 125-130gn, and either 158 semi wadcutter or 148 full wadcutter for target work.

Universally i find lead reloads will out shoot UMC or white box if loaded/crimped correctly.

All my revolvers get lead almost exclusively, except for my .30C Blackhawk. It gets mostly jacketed except for a couple of slower 150 gr cast loads. I have a couple of Super Blackhawks that have never seen a jacketed bullet down the bore, same with my Bisley .45 Colt.

Pretty much all my pistols get a mix depending on what they are and what they're used for...

DRG lead 95% of the time.

7.62x25 96g SWC from Bullet Barn, sized 309

38/357 148 Bevel base WadCutter

9mm 135gr LRN

44Spl/ Mag 240SWC

45ACP 200SWC (feeds fine in many different guns)

45 ACP 225FP my guns have a preference for one or the other bullets. I try both.

Almost exclusively lead cast by myself. About to venture into powder coating and see where that takes me. Results reported on the Cast Bullet forum are very positive. Just waiting for a couple of items. Zombie shooting will never be the same.

Take Care

What powders do you use? Anything drg with tite group and bullseye is a giant puff of smoke, tho it does look pretty cool with the laser beam sight

Shoot cast in pretty much all my hand guns with the exception of my Girsan Regard 9mm which leads horribly with loads that cause no leading in my 2 CZ's or Ruger SR-9. My lead 9mm loads also work well in my Beretta CX-4, but not in my Kel Tec Sub 2000 which will not group at all with them. My two best 9mm loads are 4.1 gr's of Win 231 with a cast Ideal 121 gr or with the the same cast bullet over 4.5 gr's of Unique. These will change shortly as I can't find 231 or Unique any where any more.
In my S&W 686 357, I shoot various 38 Special loads all with home cast, no leading, but the gentler twist in a 38 Special makes leading less likely than the tighter twist 9mm's and also you need the 9mm's a little hotter to insure reliable cycling.
In my .44 Mag I have a 240 gr RCBS gas check bullet that I load with either 4227 or Win 296

The smoke is from the DRG bullet lubricant. Nothing to do with the powder.

For nite shooting by flashlight I switch to plated bullets, otherwise I am blinded by smoke in the light beam for about 5 seconds.
