Finally found a Mosin Sniper!

Just thought I'd throw an update in here. Haven't stripped the sniper yet, however I have been doing some testing with a spare 91/30 stock.
Before and after stripping
After stripping I thought I liked the way it looked naked (must have been the fumes) so I decided to start prepping for a BLO finish. Put one coat on and decided I didn't like it. General wisdom would say it's too late to stain, but I tried any way...
Might have one more go with the stain once it's had some time to set, I quite like the way it ended up though.
Is this finish worthy of my sniper?

Heres what i did to mine , all reversible mods . added a aftermarket mount for 1 inch modern scopes , attaches to the factory PU base , made a cheek riser out of pipe insulator and Realtree Gorrila tape , works great and actually feels good on the skin .. Its a absolute tac driver ! just needs a MIL/MIL target scope and a Timney trigger now ..

I used min wax red mahogany on this stock, I'll def be using it with the Sniper. This is just one application of stain, Im sure a second go would darken it nicely. Just did first coat of Tung oil this morn, second and hopefully final tomorrow.
Not a bad idea. Would have to restain that area though
Yah but any mismatch would barely show.
The stock is in normal condition for those rifles, the barrel bands cause the finish to be scraped off each time you disassemble it. The poor quality shellac job is also normal for them, its as if they wiped the gun down with a rag during the refurb.
Overall you seem to have a nice all matching rifle. Make sure it is thoroughly cleaned of cosmoline before you use it.
Mine is one of my favorites to shoot, so far Ive had a couple 1 1/2" groups at 100yards with surplus ammo, most groups are around 2" with an occasional flyer thrown in.

Comments like that are the reason anything that's is truly worth a crap is passed from one "purist" to another without ever hitting the general market. Red dot anyone?
Indeed... that is the only way to protect the sanctity of anything that "is worth a crap".

Exactly! No 4T, Zf 39 k98, m39 SOV, PU SVT ect, ect. You know, the cheap ones dumped after ww2 & sold to guys with dull hacksaws, a belt sander & gallons of cheap varnish. Don't mind me, just howlin' don't yah know.
