.I did pound cast on bore its 308 .I went to next step and cast #2 lead in mold, boolits are proper shape ,now i went to my lyman 4500 with 309 lube sizer die continued to size and lube now boolits are out of shape. my question is am i sizing to small , putting to much pressure on bullit while sizing ? the mold im using is a 311041 . The 4500 appears to be in alignment, proper top punch. Should i be using a 310 or 311 lube sizer?

I have cast these from lyman #2 is there a possibility im trying to take this mold down to small ? Its my first time I put boolit in jaws of digital caliper can see clearly they are bent.

the bullit isn,t bent on lube area it,s the nose profile that is off centred only after lubing, and they do not shoot consistant.

The bullet should not be bent. It is possible that the top punch is deforming the bullet tip.

A picture would be priceless at this point.

You should need very little pressure though to go from .311 to .309

Can you confirm that the bullets are straight right out of the mold? There is something odd with either the sizing equipment, the bullet or the mould. If it is the top punch, I had built a custom sizing tool which uses the RCBS and Lyman sizing dies but sizes my bullets nose first. I never liked the nose punch concept.

If you can't get to the root of your problem, you can send me a few of your bullets and I will size them nose first with my press and a .309" Lyman die. That would either eliminate or confirm the nose punch as the likely culprit.

If it's a brand new Lyman 4500 I've heard the quality control isn't what it used to be. If the top punch is off center it will size the bullet of center. Hopefully Lyman will fix it.

ok thanks Earl

If i understand the problem, the bullets are coming out of the sizer with a bent nose? is that correct?

This will happen if the top punch is not aligned well with the bore of the sizing die, and is quite common. You can check by lowering the punch down onto the top of the sizer die - it should be prefectly centered and straight on the die. Either the top punch or the lubesizer machine itself may be at fault.

If the top punch is off-centre, loosen the top punch retaining screw. This allows the top punch to "float" and might be enough so that it will self centre over the bullet. Be careful you don't have the set screw backed out to the point it is proud of the ram or it will get buggered up when you lift the ram. You could take the set screw out completely if you like.

If it's not a misaligned top punch then I don't know what the problem is. Sizing down .002" should not be a problem with lyman #2 alloy. Even if the alloy was very hard and excessive force was being used, you would expect the nose to be deformed, not bent.
