I have a hankering for a new 44mag and was wondering what the general consensus was on the cylinder stop "peening" issue these had when they first came to Canada? Is it still present or more of a hit and miss thing?

Anyone sent theirs back for warranty? What did they do for you?

Cant speak for the 629, but my new 66-8 stainless has over 500rds of DA only shooting and no peening what so ever. It must of been a heat treating screw up by S&W.

I have had 4 of the 629 4.2 guns. They all have that peening, it was really cosmetic as it did not affect function at all. All of them had slight wobble in the ejector rod as well.

Agreed. Its not fun to shoot lol. Id love to get a stainless just like it in .357 though. Sadly I cant buy the stuff I want, like the snubbies.
 
I've read that some peening is typical on stainless revolvers. I've seen rugers with it as well. Maybe early models were excessive I don't know.

It is definitely an experience to shoot a few cylinders of 44 mag in the 4.2", but after that I'm good to return to lower power loads or 44 spec .

Once again I have read and seen the same thing myself in person.

nope, it'll be worse. Do yourself a favor and find replacement grips. The factory smith ones, under heavy loads feel like they aren't there, the frame just tattoo's itself into your palm bones. I'll shoot full house in a super black hawk all day, but 2 cylinder in my 629 and my palms are tingling like my hands are asleep.

Big thread on it here as well. This is when it was first noticed when they first got into Canada and folks started buying them.

I too was thinking about going with the 4.2" Canadian edition, but after much research I decided to do with a longer 6.5" barrel with full underlug. Weighs more and it's front heavy, but the weight is in the right place to control the recoil. Plus it looks badass.
